Sean Fidler Wins Laser Regatta - Now on to Long Beach

Sean Fidler on his way to a win

Sean Fidler won the 2005 Lake Lansing Laser Regatta. Because of his win, Sean now heads to Long Beach in August to represent US Sailing Area E in the National Single-handed Championship for the George O'Day Trophy.

Sean posted a third in race one, but then ran off four straight wins to become the regatta champion. Among the six Lansing area sailors, Doug Carlson had the best showing - third place.

LSC's Ian Clemens won the Best Novice Sailor award, EJ O'Mara was Best Junior Sailor and Ariel O'Mara Best Woman sailor. For complete results, visit the LSC website at www.lansingsailing.org.

Moody's Booty Crew Goes 2-1-1

"Moody's Booty" checks the line

It was another beautiful afternoon to sail on Lake Lansing - but the "Moody's Booty" crew enjoyed it particularly well. They finished second in race one, but then went on to win the two final races. Sailing with Mike Moody were Jamie Rasmussen and Steve Ziara.

Pat Dolan, Gil Chesbro and Chris Miller won race one, just beating Moody by half a boat length. They were second in race two, losing to Moody by a boat length although leading at the beginning of the final leg.

Merrick Hurbutt kept improving as the day went on, finishing fourth, then third and in the final race were a half boat length away from beating "Moody's Booty" - but finished second.

Blaine Severin, with Julie Pierce and Tom Deits put up two third place wins to round out the top three finishers in the three races sailed.

Thanks to Doug Carlson and Chris Strugar-Fritsch for their fine Race Committee work and for the pictures they took. Check out the pictures at www.lansingsailing.org.

Junior Program in Full Swing

Middlewood first solo sail

About 15 Junior Sailors have signed up to participate in this summers Junior Sailing Program at the Lansing Sailing Club. The program got off to a start on Tuesday - although some Junior Sailors were still involved in school activities and won't be available until this coming week.

Most of the Junior Sailors are new to sailing, but they quickly learned how to sail out into the lake on a reach, tack and sail back to the Club. They also worked on getting out of "irons", learned the safety position and how to recover from a capsize. Several sailors put the capsize recovery lesson to good use right away as a good size gust of wind took them over. Everyone did a great job!!!

In mid-July a team from the Lansing Sailing Club will join teams from Devils Lake and Pontiac to participate in a special all day sailing event at the Orchard Lake Country Club. At least seven Junior Sailors will be selected for the LSC team along with seven adult sailors.

Last Wednesday's Wind Unkind

When racing started at 6:30, the wind was solid. However, half way into the first race, it began to die. One race was completed - with the last boats drifting across the finish - but the wind never came back. An early start was made to Spags for the pasta special and liquid refreshment.

Neil Harrison took the Sunfish honors with Maribeth Fletcher second and Susanna Tellschow third in a six boat field. The eleven Lasers were led by Doug Carlson, Mike Moody and Olav Messerschmidt - in that order.

Skipper Saver Course Coming June 25th - LSC Members Invited

Burgee of the Lansing Power Squadron

Here is a great opportunity for anyone who spends time on the water. Learn what to do when the captain can't function.

Many situations arise on the water where someone on board a craft needs to know how to handle the boat - other than the skipper or captain. Illness, falling overboard, getting seasick, spraining an ankle are some everyday examples.

The Lansing Power Squadron teaches family members and friends what to do in these kinds of emergencies. Among other things a demo of an in-water rescue will be on the agenda.

For more information contact LSC member Dennis Dudley who is also the Education Officer of the Lansing Power Squadron.

Got Something You Want to Buy or Sell?
Tom Kelly is Looking for Laser, Trailer, Cover

If you have something of a sailing nature you want to buy or sell, put it on the LSC Classifieds page. Use the Contact Us page to send LSC the info you want out there.

Tom Kelly recently asked if we could let everyone know he is interested in a single or double laser trailer, laser hull and laser cover - not necessarily in one package deal. Check out Tom's request and contact him by clicking the "Classifieds" tab on the LSC web site home page at www.lansingsailing.org.
