Moody, Siegle and Severin Conquer Light Air

"UFP" on her way to winning Race 3

Mike Moody, George Siegle and Blaine Severin each showed their light air skills Sunday - scoring wins in the last three races of the 2004 season.

In the first race, "Moody's Booty" got on top early after a good start by going left to more wind and a left shift. Mike Moody, Ken Knight and Erin Knight led the rest of the way and went on to a 1-3-4 day.

In race two is was "Fins" turn to find the first shift and more pressure before others. George Siegle, joined by Ann Siegle and Dennis Dudley, was fourth in race one and third in the final race.

Blaine Severin, with his "Unidentified Flying Pigasus" crew of Julie Pierce and Tom Deits, led the way in the last race of the year after finishing fifth and fourth in the first two races.

Merrick Hurlbutt sailed to solid third and second place finishes in the first two races before calling it a day. Scott Watkins and Adrianne Tuttle were aboard with Merrick. Gil Chesbro took the helm of "Wind Dancer" with Susanna Tellschow and Pat Dolan crewing and drove to a second place finish in the first race. Susanna took over in the second race and finished fifth in her first time driving in a fleet race.

Larry Koster, Gary Marx and Bob Hill were together for the first time on "Shibumi" and went 7-6-5. Don and David Baron finished sixth, then seventh in their last racing of 2004. Jim and Maribeth Fletcher brought "Bananas" to the starting line in the final race of the season - and finished second.

Thanks to Terry Kleiman and Kimberly Knight for serving on Race Committee. It was a difficult day with highly variable winds and lots of shifts, but they were very active in moving the courses to meet the changing conditions.

Detailed results and standings are available through links on the Racing page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

Wind Dancer Wins Lightning Championships

"Wind Dancer" preps for spin douse Sunday

The "Wind Dancer" team won both the 2004 Lightning Fleet Full Year Championship and the Half Year Championship. In the full year Championship, twenty-one skippers were involved. While final standings are yet to be verified, it appears that six qualified for an award by sailing at least half the races.

"Wind Dancer" team members Gil Chesbro, Bob Miller, Stacy Kotecki , Susanna Tellschow and Pat Dolan led the way with 35 wins in the 67 races they sailed. Mike Moody finished the year solidly in second place while scoring 19 first place finishes.

Blaine Severin, sailing with Julie Pierce and Tom Deits in almost every race, was the third place finisher - including three firsts during the season. Neil Harrison put together a solid season with crew members Alanna Harvey and John Quensen, finishing fourth. "Sail Fevre" began to show a lot of boats its name on the stern of John LeFevre's boat as John but together a solid season including several wins to finish fifth. Leif Alton was John's most regular crew member.

Merrick Hurlbutt found a regular crew in Scott Watkins and Adrianne Tuttle - then began to be very competitive, consistently finishing among the top three or four boats. They round out the group of qualifiers.

For the Half Season, based on unofficial results, "Wind Dancer" was first, followed by Mike Moody, George Siegle, Neil Harrison and John LeFevre.

Detailed results and standings are available through links on the Racing page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

Heavy Hiking, Boot Scootin’ Fun at the Hoosier Regatta!

"Moody's Booty" crew at Wawasee

Mike Moody, Lisa Winters and Susanna Tellschow took "Moody's Booty" to Wawasee Yacht Club October 2-3 to participate in the 2004 Hoosier Regatta. The trio improved with each race and three weeks of practice for the event was capped off with a first place finish in the fourth race. "Moody's Booty" was ninth overall. The regatta was won by Sean Fidler of the Pontiac Yacht Club.

See pictures and read Lisa's write-up about both on-water and off-water fun during the event on the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

MSU's Casey Ray and Laura Schmidt in Single-Handed Championship at Ohio State

Casey Ray, MSU Freshman

LSC member Laura Schmidt, MSU Junior

Note: LSC member Laura Schmidt provides this report of the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association's Single Handed championship held over the weekend at Ohio State.

Casey Ray and I made the four hour trip to Ohio State to participate in the Single Handed Championships over the past weekend.

Unfortunately there was very little wind for most of the Regatta and many races were abandoned and restarted after huge shifts came in to turn a race into a series of reaches.

The Championships are sailed in Lasers with the men using regular rigs and the women using radial rigs.

We wish we could report good results, but the light air gave both of us a frustrating two days of sailing.

Next weekend the MSU sailing team will be off to Indianna for the "Hoosier Daddy" Regatta. This is followed on October 23-24 with the Harken Clinic and Boudeman Regatta at Gull Lake. Two LSC sailors, Mike Moody and Doug Carlson have agreed to be instructors for the Harken Clinic - thanks guys.
