Marshall, Harrison and Moody Win Light Air Races

Neil Harrison and crew racing earlier this year

"Oh m" rounding the leeward mark in Sep 19, 2004 racing

Winds were very light and very variable Sunday, making the strategic and tactical choices very difficult. The basics are to find wind and get there before others do. By the time boats got to the race one finish line they found Ron Marshall waiting for them after he had slammed the right corner and found his own wind. Ron finished the day 1-6-7 sailing with wife Jane and stallwart front person Bob Hill.

In race two, it was Neil Harrison who went way left to find his own wind and sail first to the finish line after rounding the previous mark in fifth place. Neil's crew of Alanna Harvey and John Quensen scored a 4-1-6 day. In race three, Mike Moody and Lisa Winters banged the left side on the first leg to find their own wind and kept "Moody's Booty" in front to the end. Mike and Lisa were 5-5-1 in the three races.

Lots of boats finished among the top three. Pat Dolan, Gil Chesbro and Bob Miller sailed "Wind Dancer" to a 2-2-5 day. Blaine Severin, Tom Deits and Julie Pierce took "Unidentified Flying Pigasus" on a 3-4-2 run. Larry Koster had Bill Davidson and Tom Rasmussen aboard for a 7-3-4 posting. Ann Siegle and Laura Harvey came to sail the third race and finished third. Don Baron has been introducing a new crew member to this boat. Dave Hebner was sailing with Don again yesterday and they finished 6-7-8.

Detailed results and standings are available through links on the Racing page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

Sean Fidler Wins Pontiac Laser Regatta - Four LSC Sailors Participate

The Pontiac Yacht Club sponsored their first Laser Regatta in some time and a good crowd of 22 sailors participated - including four from the Lansing Sailing Club. Sean Fidler of Pontiac won the Regatta with three firsts, a second and a third. Rick Rothenbuehler was runner-up with an identical result - but Sean beat Rick in the final race to win the tie-breaker.

Mike Moody, LSC Laser Fleet Champion in 2004, was third. Doug Carlson, holder of many LSC Laser Fleet Championships himself, was fourth. Pat Dolan and Dave MacKenzie also participated, had a great time, and finished in the middle of the pack.

MSU Sailors Win Iowa Regatta - Also Sail in Detroit

Rob Linden and Meghan Walter share a light moment at Wisconsin's Fall Fury Regatta last year

Note: LSC's Pat Dolan and Mike Moody coach the MSU Sailing Team. LSC member Laura Schmidt is a student at MSU and a member of the Sailing Team.

MSU's Sailing Team participated in two regattas over the weekend. A group of eight headed west to the University of Iowa where they formed two MSU teams - one of which won the Regatta. The event was the Davis Cup and it was contested for by teams from a dozen midwest universities. MSU1, Regatta winners, took first place in both "A" division and "B" division. Rob Linden and Meghan Walter sailed the "A" division boat while LSC's Laura Schmidt and Carolyn Somes sailed the "B" division boat.

Sailing for MSU2 were "Tripper" Hook and Arne Thielenhaus in the "A" division boat while Steve Griffith and Andy Schiller handled the "B" division boat. They brought home an eighth place finish.

A second group of three sailed in the Sloop Championship on the Detroit River near Belle Isle and finished 8th in a strong field of a dozen boats. Mike Fong, Mills Forni and Richard Manner sailed well - considering they were never able to practice together and what practicing they did was in Lightnings - not the Flying Scots that were used in the Regatta. MSU scored four upper half finishes out of the eleven races sailed - including a fourth. An unfortunate breakdown on their boat made it impossible to finish one race - however it did not hurt their score as the results for that races was the average of their finish in other races sailed. Ohio University won the Sloop Championship, followed by the University of Michigan team.
