Doug (nearest camera) and Olav found Wednesday's
wind to their liking

Doug Carlson finished Wednesday
evening's racing with two first place finishes - but it wasn't
quite enough to overtake Mike Moody's first place hold on the
Laser Season Champship. Doug finishes second for the season.
With Mike at "The
Gorge" in Oregon sailing his Blokart for a Travel Channel film,
there was a chance he could be displaced at the top of the Laser
heap for 2004. But, his luck holds and a season of hard practices
combined with very good sailing pays off.
Olav Messerschmidt matched
Carlsons performance Wednesday, scoring two firsts a second and
a third for the evening. With a newly acquired boat, he was consistently
sailing with the Laser leaders and finishes third for the season.
George Siegle was also consistently
among the leaders in Laser racing this season, with a lot of
top three finishes and finishes in fourth place for the season.
He had two second place finishes and a third Wednesday. In the
second race, he capsized at the beginning of the final downwind
leg in a huge gust of wind and scored a DNF.
The other top three finish
in Wednesday's racing was secured in the second race by Fleet
Captain Pat Dolan. With fourth place finishes in the other three
races, Dolan was able to move up one spot in the season scoring
where he ends up in fifth.
Bob Miller's
first race was one he probably wants to forget, catching the
anchor line on the windward mark and capsizing three times. But
he recovered with a fourth in the next race and was 7-4-5-6.
Bob's sailing has improved significantly - just another piece
of proof that you get better as you get older.
Blaine Severin was in good
spirits, desipite a tough night in which he found himself on
a first name basis with the water for a considerable period of
time. He ended up 6-6-Notsailing-7 for the evening. This was
uncharacteristic for Blaine in a season in which his record shows a lit
of third and fourth place finishes. Blaine finishes in sixth place for
the season.
Dave MacKenzie is another sailor
who has made a lot of strides this year. With a new boat and
a lot of time on the water, Dave qualifies in 2004 for the first
time. His final evening of Wednesday racing was 5-5-6-5. Having
taken up sailing only in the last couple of years, Dave posted
a second place finish earlier in August along with some thirds,
showing that his hard work is paying off. |
