Another Wednesday Evening Season Sails Into Sunset

Susanna Tellschow in the sunset

What a great evening for sailing. Good wind the entire time, allbeit a lot shifty with some healthy gusts in the mid teens. Many, many, many thanks to Maribeth and Jim Fletcher for serving on race committee.

Eight Lasers qualified for trophies, with two more coming within just a few races. In the Sunfish fleet, seven qualified for trophies, with two more close to qualifying.

2004 saw Optimists on the line for the first time. Junior sailor Doug Crawford raced almost every race once he began sailing and claims the trophy in that class.

Fishbeck Is Sunfish Champ - Has Four Bullets

John Fishbeck showed why he is this year's Sunfish Fleet Champion - racking up four first place finishes in the four final races of the season Wednesday.

Fleet Captain Alanna Harvey started fast with a second on her way to a 2-5-4-4 night. Dennis Dudley didn't make the first race, but came on strong with a third, second and third in the last three races. Dennis qualifies for a 2004 trophy, finishing in sixth place.

Susanna Tellshow had not sailed a boat by herself until early this season - and claims she can't swim on top of that. During the season however, she has continuously improved and had two second place finishes on this final race Wednesday, going 4-2-5-2. Susanna ended up sailing more races than any other Sunfish sailor and easily qualifies for a 2004 trophy.

Scott Fulbright came out to race for the first time this year and got two races in - going fourth and third in the middle races. Dave Vietti scored a third place finish in the first race before he had to head in and finishes fifth on the season.

For the season, Jim Fletcher takes second place, Gil Chesbro third and Neil Harrison fourth.

Carlson and Messerschmidt Lead Lasers - Moody Wins Championship

Doug (nearest camera) and Olav found Wednesday's wind to their liking

Doug Carlson finished Wednesday evening's racing with two first place finishes - but it wasn't quite enough to overtake Mike Moody's first place hold on the Laser Season Champship. Doug finishes second for the season.

With Mike at "The Gorge" in Oregon sailing his Blokart for a Travel Channel film, there was a chance he could be displaced at the top of the Laser heap for 2004. But, his luck holds and a season of hard practices combined with very good sailing pays off.

Olav Messerschmidt matched Carlsons performance Wednesday, scoring two firsts a second and a third for the evening. With a newly acquired boat, he was consistently sailing with the Laser leaders and finishes third for the season.

George Siegle was also consistently among the leaders in Laser racing this season, with a lot of top three finishes and finishes in fourth place for the season. He had two second place finishes and a third Wednesday. In the second race, he capsized at the beginning of the final downwind leg in a huge gust of wind and scored a DNF.

The other top three finish in Wednesday's racing was secured in the second race by Fleet Captain Pat Dolan. With fourth place finishes in the other three races, Dolan was able to move up one spot in the season scoring where he ends up in fifth.

Bob Miller's first race was one he probably wants to forget, catching the anchor line on the windward mark and capsizing three times. But he recovered with a fourth in the next race and was 7-4-5-6. Bob's sailing has improved significantly - just another piece of proof that you get better as you get older.

Blaine Severin was in good spirits, desipite a tough night in which he found himself on a first name basis with the water for a considerable period of time. He ended up 6-6-Notsailing-7 for the evening. This was uncharacteristic for Blaine in a season in which his record shows a lit of third and fourth place finishes. Blaine finishes in sixth place for the season.

Dave MacKenzie is another sailor who has made a lot of strides this year. With a new boat and a lot of time on the water, Dave qualifies in 2004 for the first time. His final evening of Wednesday racing was 5-5-6-5. Having taken up sailing only in the last couple of years, Dave posted a second place finish earlier in August along with some thirds, showing that his hard work is paying off.
