LeFevre,
Moody and Severin Share Lightning Spotlight |
"UFP" racing earlier
this year |
First place finishes
in Lightning racing Sunday were shared by John LeFevre, Mike
Moody and Blaine Severin. Winds were in the 8 mph range for
the most part, and generally from the North - but very shifty.
LeFevre and Severin both split with the fleet early in the races
they won and found slightly more wind and better wind angles
to the windward mark. With a good lead after the first leg, they
covered well and held on to the end. "Don Baron certainly helps
us roll tack" said John LeFevre of his middle crew for the day.
"Now we just need for work on more consistency," said John who
noted finishes of fifth anf fourth in the other races. Leif Alton
was in the front of the boat. Julie Pierce and Tom Deits crewed
on Severin's "UFP" and posted a second and a fourth in the other
two races.
Mike Moody's win was
much closer for three legs as he and the "Wind Dancer" crew traded
leads. Coming to the second windward mark however, Mike found
more pressure as the two boats split tacks. They established
a lead that was extended on the final downwind leg. Lisa Winters
and Helio Vogel crewed for Mike. In the other two races, "Moody's
Booty" took DNFs in an effort to reduce the points scored by
the other boats and stay in the running for the season championship.
"Fins", sailed by
George Siegle, Ann Siegle and Laura Harvey finished third in
the first two races and sat out the final stanza. Jim and Maribeth
Fletcher took on the fleet shorthanded, and struggled in the
first two races with a fifth and a sixth - but came on in the
last race to finish third.
"Wind Dancer", sailed
by Bob Miller, Gil Chesbro and Pat Dolan, covered "Moody's Booty"
closely as Mike Moody is currently their closest competition
for the Season Championship. The strategy worked in the first
and third race, but not in the middle one and the "Wind Dancer"
team put up a 4-2-2 score for the day.

Moody
and Fishbeck Win in Tornado Alert Shortened Wednesday Competition |
John Fishbeck paying close attention to the
telltales |
Everyone
saw the bad weather coming on radar last Wednesday - but an
effort was made to get at least a couple of races in. However
only one race was completed by the Lasers and Sunfish before
the tornado siren sounded and the boats headed in. Mike Moody
led a seven boat Laser Fleet with Doug Carlson second and Olav
Messerschmidt third.
On the Sunfish side,
John Fishbeck finished first, ahead of Gil Chesbro as the other
Sunfish Sailors made it to the starting line just in time for
the second race - and the siren that sent everyone on to an
early dinner at Spags.

Volunteers
Needed for Spartan Singles and Octoberfest |
Windward mark action from last year's Spartan
Singles Regatta |
This
year marks the second "Spartan Singles", a Laser Regatta sponsored
jointly by the MSU Sailing Club and the Lansing Sailing Club.
The date is Saturday, September 18th and brings together top
midwest collegiate sailors along with junior sailors, alumni
and other Michigan Laser sailors. The Regatta continues on
Sunday for the collegiate sailors. Volunteers are needed to
help out on the Race Committee Boat and on the Safety Boat.
The Lansing Sailing
Club also supports the MSU Sailing Club by providing Race Management
for their annual Cedarfest Regatta. This year Cedarfest is
October 2nd and 3rd. LSC is looking for volunteers to serve
on the Committee Boat and on Safety Boats for that Regatta
too.
Please contact Pat
Dolan to volunteer. Use the "Contact Us" page of the LSC web
site to send a note to the Vice-Commodore.
