Siegle Wins Two On Day of Carnage

"Fins" racing earlier this year

Sunday saw two capsizes and a couple of instances where boats accidently hit - including one that put holes in both boats. George Siegle and crew managed to avoid problems and sailed to wins in races two and three after starting slowing with a fourth place finish. Ann Siegle and Laura Harvey sailed with George on "Fins".

Pat Dolan, Susanna Tellschow and Gil Chesbro were all looking upwind getting ready for the first race when the Hurlbutt boat, with crew similarly distracted, accidently came together - resulting in holes in both boats. Hurlbutt's damage forced him to retire with a hole in the bow. Dolan and crew found a hole at the rubrail near the port side controls and decided they were able to sail as long as they didn't heel too much on starboard tack. "Wind Dancer" went on to win the first race and post a second in race two before falling into a funk in the last race of the day and getting a fourth.

Blaine Severin, Julie Pierce and Tom Deits had a very good day of sailing, leading the fleet at times. They ended up with a 2-3-5 on the day. "Moody's Booty", sailed by Mike Moody, Lisa Winters and Dave MacKenzie, also sailed well. They had a third in race one, a second in the last race of the day and a DNF in the middle contest. Neil Harrison, improving in each race, had a 5-4-3. Alanna Harvey and John Quensen sailed with Neil.

At the end of race three, John LeFevre's boat became entangled with Don Baron's. The result was both boats capsizing. That provided plenty of excitement at the end of the day as the Race Committee, Mike Moody and others chipped in to help get the boats righted. Oh well, every boat needs a cleaning now 'n then.

Larry Koster reported that Sunday's "Shibumi" crew included "the bum knee guy at age 77, the sore back guy at 73 and the shiney top guy at 71 and we didn't dare fly the spinnaker." Larry went on to describe several incidents of past years involving collisions that he and Tom Rasmussen (the sore back guy) had highly personal knowledge of. Walt (Bum Knee) DeGruyter was the third on "Shibumi" as they posted a couple of sixes before retiring.

Aside from all the carnage, it was a beautiful day with plenty of wind, a good course set by the Race Committee, and very competitive sailing.

Eight Laser sailors showed up to participate in last Wednesday's racing. Mike Moody (2-4-1-1), Doug Carlson (3-1-3-3) and George Siegle (1-5-2-4) posted first place finishes to lead the fleet.

Fletcher Has Hot Day in Sunfish

Jim Fletcher sails off into the sunset Wednesday

The Sunfish fleet had one of their better showings of the year as nine boats participated in racing last Wednesday. Jim Fletcher, with two wins and two seconds led the way. Close behind was John Fishbeck who also posted two wins to go with a third and a fourth.

In other top three finishes, Gil Chesbro took third in Race 3 and second in Race 2, Dennis Dudley had a second in Race 2, Neil Harrison had a third in Race 2 and Dave Vietti was third in Race 1.

Doug Crawford Splits with the Vice-Commodore

Doug Crawford waits for the start signal

Doug Crawford continues to improve his sailing in the Optimist class. In the first of two races, he came from fifty yards behind to score a healthy sized win over the Vice-Commodore.

In the second race however, Vice-Commodore Pat Dolan used his weight in the boat to advantage as the wind speed increased significantly and bested the younger sailor.

Doug now leads the Optimist Class with three wins and one loss.

Tellschow Sails Scott Regatta

Note: LSC member Susanna Tellschow recently sailed in a Flying Scot regatta on Crystal Lake. She provides this report.

A Flying Scott Start
Susanna on Winner's Podium

Thanks to an invitation from Kent Davis of the Crystal Lake Sailing Club, I had the opportunity to crew on his Flying Scot #5088 on August 8, and also the next weekend for the Crystal Ball Regatta on the 14th and 15th. It was my first invite to crew on a Scot which it seems are being sailed two handed (lots of spinnaker-trimming fun!).

The three races on Saturday had good wind, 35 degree shifts, the two races on Sunday morning were scrubbed for lack of wind. Of the fourteen entries, one coming all the way from St. Ignace, we placed first.

Saturday ended with a cook-out and a jazz trio of club members, and a look at my Grandpa's first boat, #175, setting out for a sail in its 45th year. This was a nostalgic trip - my Grandpa helped start this club in the early 60's and raced each summer with my Mom and others until he died in '77. I've memories of being on his boat there at age 4, and now that I'm learning to sail 30 years later, it was great to meet people he'd sailed with and who remembered him fondly.
