July 24 Laser-Sunfish Clinic Just Two Days Away

One of the premier events at the Lansing Sailing Club for 2004 is only two days away. It isn't too late to sign-up for the July 24 Laser-Sunfish Clinic featuring World Champion sailor Derrick Fries. See Clinic information on the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org for details on how to sign up.

Crew Race Sailors: Tonight is the Night

Bob Brook, Tom Rasmussen and Larry Koster are ready to sail "Such a Deal" in the crew race tonight and challenge all comers. Come on Lightning sailors - step up to the plate and join in the fun. The first of three or four races begins at 6:30. Check in on the water.

Carnage at the Windward Mark

Mike Moody's cell phone displayed radar pictures of the upcoming storm cells yesterday as the sailors readied themselves to race - but it looked like bad weather was still about an hour or so away. So, with a threatening western sky, the Laser and Sunfish sailors launched to see if they could get at least a couple of races in.

With a pleasant 8-12 mph wind, race one got underway right at 6:30. Doug Carlson, Mike Moody, Joel Shapiro and Olav Messerschmidt finished 1-2-3-4 in a ten boat Laser field. For the Sunfish, it was Gil Chesbro, Dave Vietti, Neil Harrison and Susanna Tellschow in an exciting 1-2-3-4 finish.

Race two got underway without incident. Pat Dolan and Mike Moody were OCS (Pat for the second time in two races) and went back to restart. Both were passing boats one by one, working their way toward the top of the fleet. Coming in to the windward mark, Mike and Blaine Severin came together and Mike capsized. Just then the wind suddenly came up to about 18 mph and shifted about 90 degrees - from the south to the west. Blaine did a circle but capsized near the mark during the gybe portion of the circle. Pat Dolan went around both boats and gybed around the mark - capsizing. Within seconds two more Lasers and a Sunfish were over. Wish we had a picture of the carnage to show.

Everyone worked together to get the boats upright, back to the Club and de-rigged. A quick check was made to make sure everyone was accounted for. When we found Wayne Loescher's hat floating toward shore and delivered it back to him, all the boats and equipment were also accounted for. There were a bunch of DNFs that second race.

Everyone got wet, but the water and the rain were warm and spirits were high as we changed to something dry and headed to Spagnoulas for the pasta special and liquid refreshment.

Detailed results and standings are available through links on the Racing page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

LSC Duo Shines at Laser Masters

Laser Masters Sailors Up on a Plane

Mike Moody and Doug Carlson not only had a great time at the Laser Masters Regatta in Milwaukee last weekend - they also sailed very well. At the end of the first day, Mike was in second Place before falling victim to some light air winds on Sunday. On the other hand, Doug hung in there on Saturday and then profited in the light air of Sunday to end up third for the Regatta.

Both Mike and Doug reported that they had a great time. They took the new fast ferry and saved a lot of driving time. Both report that Milwaukee is a great place to sail. When the wind and waves are up, they sail inside the breakwater as they did on Saturday. On Sunday, they sailed in Lake Michigan.

With the new Committee Boat in place, the Lansing Sailing Club Board of Directors has decided to dispose of the old Committee Boat, with members having first opportunity to make an offer. A note has been sent by email to all members with details. If a member does not wish to purchase the boat and motor, it will be posted for sale to the general public.
