"Wind
Dancer" Wins Three - Hurlbutt Coming On |

Hurlbutt in the 2003 Lightning
Regatta |
The "Wind Dancer"
team found its way to the finish line first in each of the
races Sunday. Stacy Kotecki, Gil Chesbro and Pat Dolan were
aboard - and registered come from behind wins in each race.
Merrick Hurlbutt
came to the Club without crew, but picked up Terry Kleiman.
After a first race spent figuring out trimming solutions, they
kicked it in gear and finished second in races two and three
- spending a lot of time in first place during each race.
Blaine Severin and
the UFP" crew of Julie Pierce and Tom Deits had a second and
two third place finishes. Larry Koster, Tom Rasmussen and
Bob Brooks scored the other third place finish.
Detailed results
and standings are available through links on the Racing page
of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org. |
"Fins"
Sails at Tawas |
The 2004 Fins" crew sailing in the Lansing Lightning
Regatta |
Editors Note:
George Siegle, Ann Siegle and Laura Harvey took "Fins" to
Tawas Bay last weekend to sail in the Lightning Regatta there.
George provides us with this report.
At
the Tawas Bay Regatta, there was an abundance of wind. The
first race was at noon on Saturday, and the regatta started
in 18-20 mph. Seven boats raced, and it was an "all star" regatta
with NA Champion Jim Allen, with Sean Fidler, John McCree,
Ryan Flack and of course the Princings and Chris Jacobsen from
Bay City being the other skippers. Talk about a tough crowd!
Many district and regatta champions. Like sailing in the North
Americans, one bad tack and you are in last place. Fortunately,
we kept out of that position all but once. Most finishes saw
all boats crossing the line within a minute of eachother over
the 8-mile (total) course length. The winds built throughout
Saturday, and approached class limits by 3 PM. The downwinds
featured screaming planes and "wooo hooo" was heard from
a lot of boats. Only four boats finished all the four races
Saturday.
Sunday brought lighter
conditions for the start, but by the middle of the first race,
everyone was again overpowered. Two more races were run, with
the Pricings taking the first. Sean Fidler won the second race.
Temperatures both days were in the low 70s, with zero clouds
and plenty of wind. A regatta not to be missed. Final results
are pending, but will be posted on www.tbyc.net. |

Asks for Member Help to Fight Cancer |
Editors
Note: George Siegle sends us this note asking for help from
Lansing Sailing Club Members.
As some of you
know, Ann’s grandmother is in the hospital in Traverse City,
MI battling cancer and complications from chemotherapy. Ann
and I are dedicating our cycling rides to her. Many of our
fellow sailing club members have been affected by cancer in
one form or another, and we all remember those who are no longer
with us. Now there is a good way for all of us to help.
As many
of you know, sailing is just one of my hobbies. I also enjoy
rallying, cycling and open wheel racing. Less than one month
ago, a friend from Chicago and I were thinking about how
we could combine our passion for cycling and open wheel auto
racing (namely the Champ Car World Series). Our idea literally
started with two guys who just wanted to go for a bike ride
on the race track. But we both thought BIG, and wondered how
we could make this into something important. Now, the “Tour
de Road America” is
an official part of the Grand Prix of Road America on August
7 in Elkhart Lake, WI. We will cycle the Road America circuit
for one hour with Champ Car and Trans Am series drivers
in support of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Our “little
bike ride” is
now a major event with a goal of 500 riders raising $25,000.
Founded in 1997
by cancer survivor and champion cyclist, Lance Armstrong, the
Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) seeks to promote the optimal
physical, psychological, and social recovery and care of
cancer survivors. The LAF is working to identify and improve
cancer survivor services and facilitate the delivery of those
services—and
a large dose of hope—to the patients, their families, and other
loved ones touched by the disease.
Now, I am asking
you to join me as I help the Lance Armstrong Foundation in
their efforts to improve the lives of cancer survivors. We
need help to make our event successful! The biggest area is
in donations for the event itself (called "in-kind
donations"). This helps to pay for event expenses like printing, banners,
publicity, web space, etc. It is analogous to the kindling that starts
the fire. These donations will get leveraged many times over, and at
this stage, are absolutely key to our event. You can make an instant
and secure on-line (in-kind) donation via PayPal (e.g. Visa, MasterCard,
etc) by visiting our web page at www.tour-de-ra.org and going to the
Contact page. Anything you can do to help is appreciated....from
$50 to $5.
If you would prefer
to donate directly to the LAF, you can do so by clicking on
https://secure.laf.org/Donations/donate_amount.cfm?sid=200141842 .
If you prefer to send a check or money order, please e-mail
me at sieglege@msu.edu and
I’ll
give you the details.
On behalf of all
those whose lives are affected by cancer, I thank you for your
support – with your donation we can make a positive impact on the
lives of all cancer survivors.
Your friend,
George |
