LSC's Dragon a July 4 Hit

"Buckbeak", LSC's magnificent dragon

Jim Fletcher led a Lansing Sailing Club team in the annual Lake Lansing Property Owners Association "Boat Yard Wars" on July Fourth. At 8 AM, the teams picked up materials and instructions and had five hours to build a boat. At 1 PM the teams met on the Hickory Island Sand Bar to race their boats. No one knew until that morning the materials that would be available for building the boats. Materials this year were 5 sheets of cardboard (various sizes), 4 ten foot lengths of pvc pipe, plastic film, construction adhesive, balloons, suckers and duct tape. Teams were encouraged to paint and otherwise decorate their boats.

The LSC team decided early to emphasize character instead of speed and went about building a boat with a magnificant dragon head and tail. Laura Williams, granddaughter of Pat Dolan, was the team's racer in the kids race. Maribeth Fletcher paddled for the women's race and Tom Rasmussen was on board for the men's race. It was great fun.

Later on the Fourth, about 20 members and guests showed up to picnic, decorate the Committee Boat and participate in the Parade of Boats.

Check out the pictures on the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org and plan now to participate in next year's event.
