Derrick Fries Wins Sunfish Regatta - Will Teach July Clinic

Derrick Fries Heading to Another Win

Derrick Fries, of Clarkston, showed participants at the annual Lake Lansing Sunfish Regatta why he is a World Sunfish Champion sailor. He won the Regatta with five first place finishes. Dan Norton, of Devils Lake, took home the second place trophy. Mike Moody of the Lansing Sailing Club finished third. More details on the Club web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

Derrick also agreed to teach at our upcoming Small Sail Boat Clinic on Satruday, July 24th. More details on this will be coming soon - in the meantime save the date.

LSC's Laura Schmidt at Kiel Week

Kiel, Germany from the Air
Kiel Week, the largest sailing event in the world, is now underway - and LSC's Laura Schmidt is sailing there. "Kiel is amazing" says Laura. "There is so much action with 5,000 sailors, 2000 boats and three million visitors. It is just a huge, huge festival. You can smell food when you are on the water. I'm personally a fan of the crepes (though of course i'm on a diet). Most of the Olympic sailors are in Kiel this week, using this regatta as a tune up for Athens."

Wind Dancer Team Goes 1-2-1 on Father's Day

Wind Dancer Rides a Puff Sunday

It was a beautiful Father's Day on the water Sunday as the "Wind Dancer" Team chalked up two first place finishes and a second. Team members in the boat were Bob Miller in front, Gil Chesbro in the middle and Pat Dolan in the back. Winds were in the 8 to 13 range, very puffy - and containing big shifts (one was about 90 degrees).

Mike Moody sailed with Sally Miller in front and Lisa Winters in the middle. Although "Moody's Booty" couldn't recover from a bad start in the first race - they came back to win race two and finish second in race three. Blaine Severin had Julie Pierce and Tom Rasmussen on board as "UFP" took second in race one, and thirds in each of the other races.

Some new faces at the helm Sunday included Scott Watkins who sailed with his brother and dad - picking up a third and a sixth before retiring for the day. Ann Siegle put together a "Chix Boat" - with Laura Harvey and Susanna Tellschow. They came out very hot in race one - competing for the lead and finishing 4-7-5.

Plan Now for July 2 Lake Lansing Moonlight Cruise

Full Moon: July 2
Moonrise: 9:16 pm

Plan to get some friends together and spend the evening of July 2nd having dessert and watching a full moon rise while cruising Lake Lansing. There will be several pontoon boats and sailboats available with plenty of spots for members and friends to join the cruise - or sail your own boat. Bring a dessert to pass at 8 PM. We will be on the water about 9 to enjoy the moonrise.

Koster Reports on Pontiac Regatta

Editor's Note: Larry Koster sends us the following report on Pontiac's Regatta held over the last two days.

Pontiac YC held their June Bug regatta this weekend (June 19 and 20). About 16 boats participated on Saturday, a few more for Sunday. Terrific sailing on Saturday in the blustery winds...a few near collisions at the leeward mark! LSC's Bob Brook, with his son Martin, crewed for PYC's Eric Heller aboard "Too Hot!" 14819 and capsized in Saturday's first race! Bay City's Chris Jacobson, with Gus and Rachel Dey, sailing on "Fastidiots", were the only visitor boat at the regatta. Very disappointing!

LSC's Larry Koster ventured down to Cass Lake on Sunday to be a regatta spectator and had expected to see a large turnout. Instead of riding on the pontoon boat, Jim Bowers of PYC said, "Lets take my Lightning and watch the races." At times we stationed ourselves near the windward mark, the starting line and later at the leeward mark. 'Twas a beautiful day for me to be at the helm of Jim Bower's "Excelsior" and to watch the Sunday racers from various parts of the lake. After the awards presentation Hank and Esther Callahan's daughter, Ruth Troy told us to"be sure to come to the White Cap regatta in September. We will provide sleeping space for our visitors." Over the years, Hank and Esther have been very gracious hosts for the "Fubar" crew as we slept in their big RV.
