Sunfish Regatta Next Saturday

The Sunfish Fleet has their day in the sun this coming Saturday with their annual Regatta. Come out and sail - or be a spectator. The Skipper's Meeting is scheduled for 10:30 AM with the first race to begin soon there after. Check the web site at www.lansingsailing.org for more details.

Parking

Members and guests are asked to avoid parking in front of the two Pointe Jude sailboats in the non-fleet boat parking area as they are often used. If you see that someone has parked there, please politely ask them to park elsewhere. Thanks for your cooperation.

LaBelle Wins Laser Regatta - LSC's Carlson Third

Tom LaBelle Smiles after a Win
Twenty-one Laser sailors came to the Lansing Sailing Club Saturday to participate in the Lake Lansing Laser Regatta. The winner was Tom LaBelle of Rochester Hills.

Chad Coberly is Off for North Americans

Claiming second place was Chad Coberly of Kalamazoo. Chad is now on his way to the North American Laser Championships where he will pick up a recently purchased new boat. Today's racing was the last time he sails his current boat before turning it over to the new owner.

Doug Carlson Rounds Leeward Mark

Doug Carlson of the Lansing Sailing Club was third, Jim Meyer of Pinckney fourth, and Chris Marzke of St. Joseph took home the fifth place trophy.

Claiming the Best Woman Sailor and Best Collegiate Sailor awards was Mary Vorel, Captain of the MSU Sailing Team who recently returned from participating in the National Womens Collegiate Dinghy Championship held at Cascade, Oregon. She finished sixth overall.

E.J. O'Mara was Best Junior Sailor, with a thirteenth place finish overall including a tenth place finish in the fifth race. E.J. sails out of the Lake Fenton Sail Club.

Best Novice Sailor was Chris Strugar-Fritsch. Chris finished fifteenth overall and, setting aside the first race, finished a solid and consistent 12-13-14-15-13. Chris is one of our own Lansing Sailing Club Laser sailors.

Siegle, Moody and Dolan are Sunday Race Winners

In a breeze that was building from the beginning of the day and reached about 15 mph as the boats finished racing, the closeness of competition was again demonstrated. Of ten boats competing, four boats shared the top three positions in the three races. George Siegle came from behind on the last leg to pass "Wind Dancer" and claim his first place finish. Mike Moody took the lead near the first windward mark of race two and held it until the end. Pat Dolan and his "Wind Dancer" team came from behind as the boats neared the second windward mark of race three and held on for first against a hard charging Terry Kleiman.

George Siegle, with Ann Siegle in the front position and Laura Harvey in the middle spot on "Fins", did a perfect tack-set at the final windward mark and was able to climb into first place. George had third place finishes in the other rwo races. Moody had Sally Miller and Helio Vogel on Board and the "Moody's Booty" crew sailed almost a perfect race to score their race two victory. In the other races, the "Booty" crew had a third and fourth. Stacy Kotecki and Gil Chesbro sailed with Dolan aboard "Wind Dancer" to claim two second place finishes in addition to their bullet.

Terry Kleiman, Scott Watkins and Susanna Tellschow had a solid day with a fourth and fifth to go with their second. John LeFevre, Leif Alton and Bob Miller lost their spinnaker halyard in the first race, but salvaged a sixth. They went on to a fourth in the second race and another sixth in the third.

Neil Harrison had long-time crew Alanna Harvey aboard and added Kevin Johnson at the last minute as the third crew member. They did well with a 5-6-5, having not sailed together before. Don Baron and son David were unable to fly their kite with just two aboard, but still managed well. They traded places with Tom Rasmussen and Julie Pierce who also were prudent in not flying a spinnaker with just two aboard and plenty of wind to deal with. The "Oh m" crew of ron Marhsall, Jane Marshall and Bob Hill finished seventh in the first race, then retired for the day with breezes building. Eddie, Jim and Maribeth Fletcher got "Bananas into the third race and recorded a seventh.

Summer Sailstice is Sunday - Go Sailing

Summer Sailstice is a new, global holiday celebrating sailing annually on the solstice, the longest sailing day of the year. Summer Sailstice is the easiest sailing event you’ll ever join. Plan to get out early, meet up with friends and family and go sailing. No rules, no fees, no regulations, no start time and no excuses not to go out and have fun. All that is required to participate is that you go sailing on the solstice, perhaps join others for a raft up, a sailing destination or party on the water to celebrate warm, sunny evenings and the long, summer sailing season ahead. Visit the Sailstice web site at www.summersailstice.com.

Trivia - How big is the downwind sail area of an America's Cup boat?

To get an idea of how big the downwind sail area of a modern America's Cup boat is, go stand on a tennis court. The sail area is about the same as a tennis court. . Source: America's Cup website at www.americascup.com.
