Harrison Gets a First

Neil Harrison Picture
Neil was all Smiles

Sunday was a big day for Neil Harrison. With crew Alanna Harvey and Kim Harrison, Neil recorded his first top finish in Lighting racing. After going around the final windward mark on his way to a downwind finish, Neil gybed immediately to get out in the Lake where there was a little more wind - and where they could gybe again and come in to the finish on Starboard. The strategy worked to perfection - and when the lead boat capsized, Neil was there to take advantage.

Mike Moody had quite a day. Sailing with Sally Miller and Lisa Winters, they found their way to a first place finish in race one. Then in race two, with the finish line and first place only 100 yards away, the wind shifted - putting the boat by the lee. The boat broached to windward and capsized spectacularly. Sorry, no camera was available to record the event. They did drift across the finish to avoid a DNF. After righting the boat, it turned downwind, pitchpoled and capsized spectacularly a second time. This time, however, they discovered a broken spreader and retired.

With Pat Dolan and Gil Chesbro on Race Committee Duty, Helio Vogel took the helm of "Wind Dancer", sailing with Stacy Kotecki and Susanna Tellschow, and won the third race of the day.

In tough conditions with winds gusting in the 20s, the racing was very close all day. Congratulations to John LeFevre for a second and two third place finishes sailing with Leif Alton and Tom Rasmussen. Also kudos go to Merrick Hurlbutt for a second, third and fourth on the day. Merrick's crew was Adrianne Tuttle and Scott Watkins. Many thanks to Larry Koster and Dave MacKenzie who volunteered to help the Race Committee.

Lightning results and standings are now available on the LSC web site through the "Racing" page. Note that this year there are two opportunities for Lightning sailors to score. There is a full season championship and a half season championship. The half season includes approximately every other week of racing - with weeks where a Lightning regatta is being held not included. This also give those wishing to participate in regattas a shot at a championship.

Vince Delgado and Becky Shink Make Memorial Day Great Fun

Becky and Vince Made the Day

About 30 LSC members believed the rain would go away (which it did) and enjoyed a wonderful Memorial Day outing at the Lansing Sailing Club. Becky Shink and Vince Delgado, new members in 2004, took charge and made it a lot of fun. The food was plentiful and cooked to perfection.

While the wind was too high for an on-water regatta activity that Vince and Becky had planned, that didn't stop a couple of sailors from going out. Jim Fletcher took his Sunfish on the water and Pat Dolan took a short ride in his new Optimist Dinghy - just to say he had sailed it.

Meanwhile, there were activities ashore. A spirited Bocce Ball game attracted a crowd. The Red team eeked out a win in the first game, but the Blue team was dominant in the second game.

Stacy and Jerome Kotecki's girls, Lindsey and Taylor, posed for pictures in the Dolan Optimist Dinghy and got some instruction on hiking out from Tom Rasmussen as a bonus.

LSC member Laura Schmidt skippered the B Division boat for MSU at the North American Women's Collegiate Championships which concluded Friday. Laura reported it was "very rainy with lot's of postponments for either lack of wind or for squalls to pass." Yale won the event convincingly. MSU's women finished 16th - ahead of the University of Michigan who finished 18th. The MSU women got stronger during the competition and had a fourth, fifth and seventh to show for their efforts in individual races. The event was sailed in FJs. Complete details can be found at www.collegesailing.org/nwicsa/na/default.htm.
