A beautiful evening on Lake Lansing with a pleasant wind of 5 to 10 mph provided the backdrop for racing. Six Laser sailors participated.

Olav Messerschmidt won the first Laser race of 2004 on Lake Lansing yesterday (Wed). Then Mike Moody took over and won the three remaining races - coming from behind on the last leg each time. Mike had a second to go with this three firsts.

Olav finished the evening with a first, two seconds and a third. Also at the top of the fleet was George Siegle. George finished 3-4-2-3. Right behind the leaders were Pat Dolan (4, 3, 5, 4), Blaine Severin (5-5-4-5) and Chris Strugar-Fritsch (6-6-6-6).

Squall Capsizes Many at the Gorge

The North American Women's Collegiate Championships got under way yesterday (Wed) on the Columbia River. Michigan State has five sailors at the event including LSC member Laura Schmidt. Eighteen teams raced in a dreary 8-10 knots and rain. Later in the day a squall bringing rain and winds at 15-20 knots capsized over half of the B Division. Then, after a brief break, the day finished in 10-15 knot breeze and very light rain. A Division completed six races and B Division finished four races. Racing continues in FJ's through Friday. Event website: www.collegesailing.org/nwicsa/na/default.htm. For Michigan State, Mary Vorel '05 is skipper of the A Division Boat with Jaime Ziegler '04 and Meghan Walter '06 crewing. Laura Schmidt '06 is skipper of the B Division boat with Erin Holcomb '07 and Jaime Ziegler '04 crewing.

Dolan Rigs His Optimist - Participates in Rescue

Dolan Opti Picture
Dolan's New Opti

Don Baron had gone sailing in his Lightning and Pat Dolan was rigging his new Optimist on a nice Wednesday morning. Suddenly, Don Baron was seen being brought to the Club in a small motor boat by a lake resident. His Lightning had capsized - and turtled. There are only a couple of places on Lake Lansing deep enough for a sailboat to turn completely over - and Don had found one. Using the new Committee boat, and with advice and assistance from Walt DeGruyter and a couple of fisherpersons in the area, Don's boat was soon righted and sailing again.

Meanwhile, Pat returned to getting his Opti rigged. His 10 year old grand-daughter Laura will sail it when she visits - but Pat wants some prospective junior sailors whose families are Lansing Sailing Club members to test it out too. Let Pat know if you are interested.
