Klaban Repeats as Lightning Regatta Champion

Tom Klaban, of the Pontiac Yacht Club, won the 39th Annual Lake Lansing Fleet 387 "Tune-Up" Regatta. Tom gathered three first place finishes, a second and two thirds during the day. With a toss-out, he ends up with 8 points and a solid winning performance. Tom also won last year's Regatta.

Ten boats participated in the Regatta, including seven from the Lansing Sailing Club. Four of the seven took away trophies by finishing second through fifth. George Siegle, Fleet Captain, was runner-up with a first, two seconds, a third and two fourths - scoring 12 points with his toss-out. George also took home the "Ye Olde Silver Platter" award for being the highest finishing Lake Lansing Boat, as well as a cup for being the highest finishing MSU graduate.

Mike Moody finished third in the regatta, including a first, second, two thirds, a fifth and a sixth place finishes - for a total of 14 points after tossing out the sixth. Terry Kleiman had finishes of 5, 6, 6, 4, 2 and 4 for a total of 21 after tossing a sixth - and fourth place in the regatta. Pat Dolan finished fifth with a 2, 5, 1, 6 before calling it a day after broaching, falling overboard and having to expend a little too much energy getting back in the boat.

It was a very successful regatta thanks to the volunteer help of many Fleet members and Club members Jim Ault, Sid Mook, Joel Shapiro and Bill Wadland who served on Race Committee.

Come to the LSC Memorial Day Picnic

All members and their guests are invited to participate in the annual Lansing Sailing Club Memorial Day Picnic and Fun Regatta on Monday, May 31st. The Picnic will begin at noon with LSC providing hot dogs, brats, soft drinks and paper/plastic. Bring a dish to pass. Lots of fun activities are in the works. You will have a great time.

"Wind Dancer" and "Fins" Take Sunday Firsts

George Siegle got Sunday (May 23) racing started with a first place finish. With Ann Siegle in the front of the boat and Laura Harvey in the middle, George went on to sail "Fins" to a third in race two and a second in the final race of the day.

The "Wind Dancer" team took first place finishes in the last two races to go with a second in the first race of the day. Stacy Kotecki handled jib and foredeck, Gil Chesbro was in the middle calling tactics upwind and trimmed the spinnaker downwind. Pat Dolan drove the boat.

Terry Kleiman was fortunate to have spouse Mary and Lori Katz aboard for two races in which they finished third and second. Then Lori took charge of young Katz while Matt went sailing with Mike Moody and Terry to score a fourth in the final race. This was Matt's first sailboat racing - and Terry was very complimentary of his work.

Don Baron and son Dave got their Lightning on the water for the first time this season - putting up a fifth place finish. John LeFevre took Scott Watkins and Susanna Tellschow in his Lighting and improved every race - putting a sixth, fifth and third on the tally sheet for the day. Julie Pierce and Tom Deits crewed for Blaine Severin and came in fourth twice before retiring for the day.

It was a beautiful day of sailing - and everyone was off the water before the big storm of the day went through. Thanks to the race committee of Lary Koster, Bob Miller and Bob Brook for their fine work on a day when moving marks during the race was necessary to keep pace with big wind shifts.

Complete results and Standings will be available soon on the LSC web site.

LeFevre and Vietti are LSC Heros for Installing Water at Ramp

John LeFevre and Dave Vietti are our heros of the week for installing water at the launch ramp. All of us can now rinse our boats off as we pull them out of the water - or take them to the ramp for a cleaning. The new system got an immediate test by Lightning Regatta participants - and it worked to perfection. Dave Vietti helped John get the project started as the two of them used a trencher to put in a water line. John made the system operational Saturday by installing a hose with a take- reel. Thanks - you two are terrific.

New Committee Boat a Hit - Dock Raised

The new LSC Committee Boat was used for the first time during Saturday's Lightning Regatta - then again on Sunday for Lightning fleet racing. It scored an immediate hit. The motor is one of the new four-stroke variety - much more reliable and better for the environment. The boat's stability is obvious the moment you climb on board. Operating the boat takes a bit of orientation - so be sure to get checked out before using it. Doug Carlson has headed this project and done outstanding work.

Another waterfront change happened Sunday at the Club - necessitated by all the rain we have received. The new Committee Boat dock was raised so it is above the water level by about six inches. Thanks to Terry Kleiman, Susanna Tellschow, Mike Moody, Scott Watkins, George Siegle, Ann Siegle and Pat Dolan for getting this job done.

MSU Sailing in National Championship this Week

Four MSU women are headed for Cascade Locks, Oregon for the Collegiate Sailing Women's North American Championship. Wisconsin and the University of Michigan join them as the only midwest teams that qualified for the 18 team field. Racing will take place in the Columbia River Gorge (the "Gorge") May 26th through the 28th. There will be two divisions of FJs. Lansing Sailing Club member Laura Schmidt is also a member of the MSU Sailing Team and is one of the sailors participating in this event.

First Optimist Shows - LSC Kids Can Test It Out

Members can soon get a look at Optimist Dinghys on Lake Lansing. Three of them have been purchased to sail here by families living on Lake Lansing. This is a great boat for kids to learn to sail in. When you get a chance, check out the one Pat Dolan purchased. His 10 year old grand-daughter Laura will sail it when she visits - and he also looks forward to having some of the LSC kids get a chance to test it out. Let Pat know if you are interested.

Welcome New Members: Rosenbaums, Janet Smith and Scott Watkins

The Board of Directors has approved membership applications for three new members. Scott Watkins, who is sailing regularly with Merrick Hurlbutt this year, is a new Associate Member. Janet Smith, who had never sailed before until taking a Sunfish out a few days ago, is also a new Associate Member. The Board also approved a Regular membership (Rack-only) for the Rosenbaum family. The Rosenbaums recently purchased an Optimist, and we look forward to seeing ten year old Austin on the water soon.
