Wind Dancer Team Wins Lightning Championship

The Wind Dancer Team has won the 2003 Lightning Fleet Championship. Team members Pat Dolan (skipper), Gil Chesbro (Middle Crew), John LeFevre (Middle Crew), Stacy Kotecki (Front Crew), Bob Miller (Front Crew), Gary Marx (Front Crew) and Shelly Kindig (Front Crew) climbed into first place with three wins on June 22nd - and have stayed there ever since. Over the course of the season they won 31 of 66 fleet races and two of the three crew races.

Mike Moody sailed Moody's Booty finished in second for the season championship. During the season, Mike compiled 14 first place finishes, 20 second place finishes and finished lower than fourth place only once.

Defending champ George Siegle was third in "Fins". George won forty percent of all the races he entered, ending up with 14 first place finishes in 35 races. Other priorities have kept George from sailing as much as in previous years.

This was a record year for Lightning sailing with twenty three different skippers participating at one point or another. Ten skippers qualify for series standing by sailing at least 40 percent of the races. In addition to those mentioned above, those qualifying include Blaine Severin, Terry Kleiman, Ron Marshall, Larry Koster, John LeFevre, Merrick Hurlbutt and Don Baron.

Standings and race details can be found on the Lansing Sailing Club web site at www.lansingsailing.org by clicking the "Race Results" button, then clicking "Lightning Fleet Racing".

Kleiman-Katz-Winters Get Another Win

Terry Kleiman, Lori Katz and Lisa Winters tallied their second win of the year in Sunday racing yesterday. There was a little bubbly flowing post race in celebration not only of this win, but of a very successful season. Blaine Severin led much of the way in the first race on Sunday, but Kleiman came in to the finish with the spinnaker full on a hot angle and just beat Blaine. Severin later added a third place finish to his list of accomplishments for the day.

Pat Dolan, Gil Chesbro and Stacy Kotecki won races two and three in "Wind Dancer" and took the season championship (see story above). Mike Moody had Doug Carlson and newcomer Sussana Tellschow crewing and finished second twice. John LeFevre sailed his new Lightning with Bob Miller and Larry Koster aboard and ended up with two third place finishes.

Standings and full race details available through the "Race Results" page of the Lansing Sailing Club web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

Please Lock Up

Members using the Lansing Sailing Club are reminded to be sure and check to make sure everything is locked when they are the last to leave the club grounds. Even if you didn't use the sail shed, equipment shed, kitchen or ladies room - please do a quick check to make sure everything is locked up. This reminder comes because the sail shed was found unlocked last Monday evening.

Fiberglass Repair - Boat Storage Deal

Brian Nickels, owner of "Fiberglass Specialists", is making a special offer to anyone who wants to store their boat with him and needs to have some fiberglass repair work done. He will shrink wrap the boat and do the repair work sometime during the winter at a ten percent discount. For a Lightning, the cost for shrink wrapping and storage is $175 which includes the cost of a trailer lock. The boat will be ready to go in the spring when the 2004 sailing season starts. Give Brian a call at 810-235-0473.

Winter Boat Storage Inside

Inside boat storage is available during the winter through several sources. Fairgounds at both Ingham County (Mason) and Livingston County (Fowlerville) often have space available as do several locations with pole barns. The Lansing Sailing Club web site contains contact information at www.lansingsailing.org by clicking the "Sailing Info" button, then clicking "Boat Storage - Offseason".

MSU Sailors Host Cedarfest - Participate in Singles Regatta

The fog lifted just in time to let a little breeze float over Lake Lansing Saturday, right on time for the start of the Cedarfest Regatta. Wisconsin teams dominated the event, finishing first and second. Other schools participating were Northwestern, Michigan (3 teams), Ohio U, Illinois (2 teams) and Michigan State (2 teams).

Fourty-four competitors enjoyed one of the best weekends of the season with most of the day spent in the mid-60's and sunny skies. Windward-leeward and Modified Olympic courses were used. Outstanding race management was provided by volunteers from the Lansing Sailing Club. Mike Moody served as principal race officer. Working on the Committee Boat were Alanna Harvey, Lori Katz, Bob Miller, Blaine Severin and Lisa Winters. Doug Carlson, Pat Dolan, John LeFevre and Olav Messerschmidt worked the Safety Boats. Thank you! Thank you!

Severin Places Third at North Cape Regatta

Note: Thanks to Larry Koster for providing us this brief story of a Lansing crew who sailed in last weekend's "Fall Blowout" at North Cape Yacht Club.
Saturday, October 11th, was a beautiful autumn day to be sailing on Lake Erie, some two miles out and 9 miles north of Toledo, out of the North Cape YC at LaSalle, MI. Three races back to back, first two races in winds of the 5-8 range, conditions improved for the 3rd race with winds in the 8-12+ range.

Beautiful spinnakers all over the place. Thistles with the first start, Lightnings 5 minutes later and after the next 5 minutes the Interlakes followed, with some 35+ boats and crews racing.

Blaine Severin, with Tom Deits and Larry Koster, aboard the UFP (Unidentified Flying Pigs) took a 2nd place finish in the first race, then followed with two 3rd place finishes in the Lightning fleet to finish at 3rd in the Lightning class for the "Fall Blowout". John Heagy of Toledo took 2nd place honors with a 3rd place finish in the first race, then followed with two 2nds. Ernie Dieball, the North sailmaker of Toledo, took 1st for all three races.

It was a nice trip down I-96 at Williamston to I-275 past Detroit Metro Airport to I-75 just north of Monroe. It was about 105 miles from Blaine's home in Okemos. Autumn colors in "full bloom" along the entire route with temperatures in the low 70s.
