Late Start for Last Day of Lightning Racing this Sunday

It is hard to believe that the season has gone by so fast. This coming Sunday is the last day of LIghtning racing on Lake Lansing for 2003. Let's have a big turnout of Skippers and Crew. The skipper's meeting will be at 1:30 and the first race begins at 2:00. This is one hour later than usual due to the Cedarfest Regatta that concludes on Sunday.

Results and standings are available from the Race Results page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

MSU's Cedarfest Regatta is this Weekend

The Michigan State University Sailing Club holds its annual "Cedarfest" Regatta this weekend on Lake Lansing. Some of the best collegiate sailors from the midwest will be participating. Each school's team consists of four individuals. Two race in the "A" division and the other two race in the "B" division. Their combined scores determine the regatta winners. The teams change boats after every two races so that no team has a "good" or "bad" boat for the regatta. Volunteers from the Lansing Sailing Club are providing Race Management for the regatta. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Pat Dolan.

This Wednesday it's Tell Tales at Spags

Lansing sailors begin their "Second Wednesday" off-season gatherings this Wednesday (October 8th) at Spagnoula's from 7 PM to 9 PM. Come and join us for the pasta special (or whatever else you might want to order from the menu) and talk sailing. This month features a discussion of tell-tales and our infamous rules quiz will also be on the agenda. Come and join in the fun.

Docks Out is the Morning of October 18

Calling all Lansing Sailing Club members for Docks Out on Saturday, October 18th from 9 AM to Noon. Information will be coming to you by email in the next day or two about assignments. The information will also include detail on how to handle schedule conflicts. Docks Out is a required activity for members (except for Senior members - but most of them enjoy participating anyway). Be on the lookout.

MSU Sailing Team Hot and Cold

Note: LSC and MSU Sailing Team member Laura Schmidt reports on MSU Sailing Team action from last weekend's Indiana and Michigan road trips.
MSU's Sailing Team sent sailors to the "Last Call" Regatta at Indiana and to the "Cary Price" intersectional regatta at Michigan this last weekend. The racing at IUPUI (Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis) was very tight. Saturday's races were sailed in heavy air and our sailors had a lot of fun. After that first day the top three crews in A Division were just 2 points apart. We were in the middle of the three, just one point from first. The second day brought light air (well perhaps saying it was light is an insult to light...there was no wind) and we floated upwind in a race that should probably been abandoned. We came back from a poor start to finish third. This was not, however, enough to hold our spot and we dropped to third with 18 points with the top two boats having 16 each. Purdue won the A Division and Ohio State won overall with a second in A Division and a first with straight bullets in B Division. Michigan State made some spur of the moment crew adjustments due to a sick crew member but rallied to place 5th overall.

At Michigan, MSU's Mary Vorel started the day right with a win. However, the heavy winds took their toll part way through the first day as two of the MSU sailors capsized and the boat turtled. Wet, cold and exhausted - plus a sick crew member put MSU behind the eight ball. However, Mary and her crew rallied to a fourth in the "A" Division.

Wind Dancer Runs the Table

The "Wind Dancer" team of Pat Dolan, Gil Chesbro and Stacy Kotecki were on their game Sunday, pulling out wins in all three races with tight competition. The team has sailed very well this year and continue to enjoy a hold on first place for the season championship.

Ron Marshall, Jane Marshall and Bob Hill pulled into the lead coming into the last windward mark in race one - but sailing without a spinnaker, couldn't hold off "Wind Dancer" on the final downwind leg. Their "Oh m" finished second - then went on to finish third and fourth in the remaining races.

The team of Terry Kleiman, Lori Katz and Lisa Winters sailed well all day. They were among the leaders in all the races and held the lead for much of race two. At the end of the day, they had a second and two third place finishes.

Merrick Hurlbutt and Scott Watkins started the day slowly, taking two fourth place finishes - but in the final race were challenging for the lead. At the end, they finished second by less than a boat length.

On all the boats however, the talk was about Junior sailors Anna Hamilton, Cory Sweet and Brad Kern. With Mike Moody sailing his Laser in the "No Sweat" regatta, this young team raced for the first time in "Moody's Booty". Like all of us when we started, they were at the back of the fleet. But they showed everyone they had no fear at the starts, had their spinnaker going, kept the boat on its feet in some heavy puffs, for the most part seemed to be having a good time - and returned Mike's boat in the same good shape it started the day. If they can stay together and continue racing, they are going to be very good.
