Siegle Wins Two As Wind Blows |
George Siegle won two of three races on Sunday (September 14), sailing with Ann Siegle and Laura Harvey. Pat Dolan won the other race, with Gil Chesbro and Stacy Kotecki aboard "Wind Dancer". The southerly wind was a solid 10-12 mph with gusts in the 15 mph range, ideal sailing conditions except for the threat of rain. However, the Race Committee of Paul Davis and Dave MacKenzie ran all three races with only a few drops of rain to spoil the day. Five boats lined up for the first race with the windward mark at 190 degrees from the starting area and the usual oscillating wind centered from that direction. George Siegle split from the fleet at the start to successfully work the right side of the course and grab an early lead. Dolan's "Wind Dancer" was close behind with the "Shibumi" crew of Larry Koster, Tom Rasmussen and Paul Marttila in striking distance. The boats held their positions on the first downwind, but rounding the leeward mark, "Wind Dancer" went into high gear and climbed into a lead half way up the second windward leg. Although Dolan and crew crossed the finish line first, they unknowingly had their spinnaker hit the windward mark during the hoist as they rounded the mark, and accepted a disqualification. Koster ended up in second place. Merrick Hurlbutt, with Bill Cramer in the middle and Scott Watkins in the front finished third. George Siegle, was the master of race two, getting in phase on the windward legs and his crew showing excellent boat handling to sail to their second win of the day. The wind had come up a little, causing several boats to find their way back to the Club. Meanwhile, Dolan and crew finished second while Hurlbutt was third again. Merrick Hurbutt scored another third place finish in the third race, while Siegle came in second. Dolan was first, capturing an early lead that was never relinquished. Spartan Singles Laser Regatta is this Saturday |
Okay Laser sailors. Get your boat ready early this coming Saturday for one last day of Laser racing on Lake Lansing this year. "Spartan Singles", a regatta sponsored by the MSU Sailing Club in cooperation with the Lansing Sailing Club is the event. Racing is scheduled to begin as soon as possible after a 9 am Skipper's Meeting. Sailors will rig and launch from the Lansing Sailing Club. An $8 entry fee includes lunch. After racing concludes about 4:00, there will be video and analysis of the day's sailing. Collegiate sailors will continue the regatta on Sunday but for the non-collegiate group this is a one day regatta. There is still a need for volunteers to help with race management by serving on race committee or in a safety boat. Please contact Pat Dolan to volunteer. |
