Carlson Wins Laser Fleet Championship |
Doug Carlson capped a special season of Laser sailing with four wins in four races Wednesday to walk away with the Fleet Championship. Despite improved sailing from everyone in the fleet and more boats at the starting line than in recent years, Doug chalked up a lot of wins. Forty seven Laser fleet races were held in 2003, of which Doug participated in 38 and won 27 of these. Twelve Lasers participated in Wednesday's racing to close out the Lansing Sailing Club Laser fleet racing season. Although the wind was gentle, it was enough to complete four races by sunset. MSU Sailing Team members have been practicing almost daily in praparation for the National Collegiate Single Handed Championships and four of them joined in the racing too. Mike Moody secured his hold on second place in the season standings with two second place and two third place finishes. After racing and participating in post race activities at Spagnoula's, Mike hit the road for Newport where he is going to participate in the Laser Masters Championship. George Siegle, holder of third place for the season championship, included a third place finish in one of the three races he sailed Wednesday. Olav Messerschmidt recovered from a slow start in race one to go out 2-2-4 with some solid sailing. Olav finishes the season championship run in fourth place. Results and standings are available from the Race Results page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org. |

Laser Sailors Wanted September 20 for Spartan Singles Regatta |
There is one last day of Laser racing on Lake Lansing in 2003. Laser Sailors are asked to join in the fun on Saturday, September 20 as part of "Spartan Singles", a regatta sponsored by the MSU Sailing Club in cooperation with the Lansing Sailing Club. Racing is scheduled to begin as soon as possible after a 9 am Skipper's Meeting. Sailors will rig and launch from the Lansing Sailing Club. An $8 entry fee includes lunch. After racing concludes about 4:00, there will be video and analysis of the day's sailing. For collegiate sailors the regatta continues on Sunday. By getting a lot of involvement from LSC and other Laser sailors we hope to simulate the size of the National Collegiate Single Handed Championship event that is coming soon as well as provide a high quality of competition. There is also a need for volunteers to help with race management by serving on race committee or in a safety boat. Please contact Pat Dolan to volunteer. |

MSU Sailing Team Off to Wisconsin and Purdue |
| MSU Sailors are off to Wisconsin and to Purdue to launch their fall sailing season. Although the team has not found opportunities to practice as much as they would like to, they are strengthened by the addition of some strong sailors and a growing membership in the MSU Sailing Club. Good luck Spartan Sailors. |

Alingi-Oracle Moet Cup Coverage on OLN |
Two America's Cup boats are going to be at it again next week from September 15-20 in the Moet Cup - and OLN is going to have some coverage (see the Sailing on TV section for the coverage schedule). This cup pits the America's cup winner Alingi, led by Ernesto Bertarelli, against Oracle, the new challenger of record led by Larry Ellison. Races will be held on a short, roughly hour-long course -- back and forth a few times between Treasure Island and the Golden Gate Bridge on San Francisco Bay. Each day of the regatta will feature a doubleheader. An Owner/Driver series will pit Ellison against Bertarelli, followed by a Pro/Driver series with Oracle skipper Chris Dickson and helmsman Gavin Brady vs. Alinghi skipper Russell Coutts and tactician Jochen Schuemann. A source of more information is www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2003/08/31/SP297254.DTL.
