Five LSC Lightning Teams and MSU Sailors Go to Pontiac |
Five Lightnings with crews of three from the Lansing Sailing Club made their way to Pontiac this last weekend for the Whitecap Regatta. Also participating were several members of the MSU Sailing Team. Each year for the last few years, Lansing sailors have improved their finishes at Pontiac. This year was no exception. A total of 43 boats were at the starting line. Pat Dolan, Shelly Kindig and John LeFevre took "Wind Dancer", despite being over early in three of the four races, fought back and were the highest scoring LSC boat with a 15th place finish. Based on this, time spent in practice working on getting a good transit will yield immediate results. Mike Moody, Ken Knight and Anna Hamilton were aboard "Moody's Booty" Sunday to score an 8th place finish in the final race of the regatta - the best individual race effort by any of the Lansing Boats. Kim Knight sailed with Mike and Ken on Saturday. The "Boat With Many Names" found its way to Pontiac, sailed by Terry Kleiman and his loyal crew Lisa Winters and Lori Katz. Jim Fletcher, Maribeth Fletcher and Larry Koster took "Bananas". Blaine Severin, Julie Pierce and Tom Deits sailed "Unidentified Flying Pigs". MSU Sailing Team members Corey Schoenherr and Stephen Gerst showed their high level of skill as crew. Corey sailed with Jim Allen who won the Regatta. Stephen sailed with Chris Jacobson who came in with a fifth place finish. Great job State Sailing Team members. This was the first out-of-town regatta for Tom Deits, Anna Hamilton, Lori Katz, Shelly Kindig, Kim Knight and Lisa Winters. The newbies and veterans all learned a lot - and had a good time too. |

Sailors and Committee Wanted for September 20-21 Spartan Singles Regatta |
Lansing Sailing Club Laser Sailors are asked to come out for one last race day on Saturday, September 20. The event is "Spartan Singles", a regatta sponsored by the MSU Sailing Club in cooperation with the Lansing Sailing Club. Collegiate sailors are preparing for their national single handed championship and the goal of "Spartan Singles" is is to simulate the size of the national event as well as the quality of competition. To do this, we want all our Laser sailors to join in on the Saturday portion of the event and some of the top Laser sailors in the midwest have also been invited to participate. There is also a need for volunteers to help with race management by serving on race committee or in a safety boat. Please contact Pat Dolan to volunteer. |

MSU Sailing Team Starts Fall Regattas This Coming Weekend |
| From
LSC and MSU Sailing Team Member Laura Schmidt MSU Sailing is excited to have one of the largest and most diverse memberships our club has seen in recent years. Though we have gotten off to a somewhat slow start due to scheduling conflicts with the University's sailing programs, the turnouts and excitement at our practices and recent clinic show that we have a potential for a great year. We would also like to thank all the members of the Lansing Sailing Club for their continued support of our team - particularly the members whom have lent out their lasers, allowing us to practice in order to prepare for the upcoming district single-handed championships and qualifiers for nationals. Particularly helpful have been Mike Moody and Pat Dolan who have given us their time and expertise on an almost daily basis. Next weekend we will attend our first two regattas of the year. Our more advanced sailors will attend the Fall Fury Intersectional at Wisconsin University and we will also send two teams (a total of 8 sailors) to the Boiler Cup at Purdue University. |

America's Cup XXXII Venue List Shortened |
The America's Cup Management has now reduced the number of sites under consideration for the next America's Cup - probably to be held in 2006. The site will be in Europe as the Swiss team "Alingi" won the last cup. A final selection is to be made before mid December between Lisbon (POR), Marseille (FRA), Naples (ITA), Valencia (ESP). Go to the America's Cup official site for more detail at www.americascup.com/index_en.php. |
