Labor Day Festivities Start at Noon

The Lansing Sailing Club Labor Day festivities begin at noon today with a picnic. Bring a dish to pass. LSC provides hotdogs, brats, soft drinks, paper and plastic. An on-the-water activity follows the picnic lunch, weather permitting.

"Wind Dancer" Team Wins Race 1 Big. "Moody's Booty" Takes Race 2.

Note: See picture at www.lansingsailing.org.
In light winds, the "Wind Dancer" crew of Pat Dolan, Gil Chesbro and Bob Miller got off to a fast start on Port for race 1. They crossed a fleet tied up with a boat over early and another boat tacking blowing away all the air. From that point on, they kept finding new wind first and padded a lead that grew to more than a leg by the end of the race. Mike Moody sailed high angles with his spinnaker - traversing a longer distance, but with greater speed - and was able to come in hot at the end to nip Blaine Severin for second place.

In race two, the boats were much more sensitive to the need for keeping the boats moving and the race was very competitive. Mike Moody and Lori Katz, sailing the "Booty", came in fast at the first windward mark and built a ten length lead as the rest of the pack ended up either pinching to make the mark or being on the outside of the pinwheel. By the end of leg two, "Wind Dancer" had climbed back into second place and set off after Mike and Lori. As their tacking duel slowed them down, the remaining boats gained until at the finish, the first four boats went across the finish almost at the same time. Moody won, followed by Blaine Severin who was sailing with Julie Pierce and Scott Watkins aboard. In third place was Bob Hill who drove "Bananas" while Jim and Maribeth Fletcher served as crew.

Results and standings are available from the Race Results page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

Wednesday Racing Coming Down to the End

There is only one more Wednesday evening of racing in 2003 for Sunfish Sailors - and two Wednesday's for Laser Sailors. So clear the schedule for one or two last outings.

Picture Story on Lisa Winters' First Solo Sail

Associate Member Lisa Winters was new to sailing this Spring when she began crewing on Terry Kleiman's Lightning. Recently she undertook her first solo sail - on a Laser. Terry was there with his camera to record the event and you can see the pictures and read more on the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.
