"Wind Dancer" Team Wins Three on Sunday

Pat Dolan, Gil Chesbro and Stacy Kotecki made "Wind Dancer" a hot boat Sunday with three bullets. In races one and two, they came from behind to land the victories. In the third race, they led from the beginning after a full speed start at the favored end of the line. Mike Moody, Ken Knight and Anna Hamilton sailed well too - holding the lead position throughout much of two races and ending up with three solid second place finishes on the day in this fleet of nine.

Race one found "Wind Dancer" fouling several boats when she couldn't tack quickly enough to evade some starboard boats at the start. However, after doing a penalty circle, they quickly got back into the race and were soon within striking distance of leader "Moody's Booty". On the last leg, taking advantage of a gust of wind, they were able to go above the "Booty", take her wind, and win the race by a small margin.

In race two, it was a first rate leeward mark rounding heading into the last leg that made the difference. Holding the spinnaker until the very end, "Wind Dancer" was able to close the gap with "Moody's Booty" to a boat length. Then, the boats split tacks and the "Wind Dancer" team found a little more wind and a lifted tack to gain a small lead. At this point the two boats engaged in a brutal tacking duel all the way to the finish.

Race three also featured a spectacular tacking duel on the last leg between "Wind Dancer" and "Moody's Booty". "Booty" gained on almost every tack. However, the finish line came just in time for the "Wind Dancer" team.

Results and standings are available from the Race Results page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

Hurlbutt and Fletchers Sail Well

Merrick Hurlbutt took Scott Watkins on board to crew Sunday and did a lot of things right. They ended up with two third place finishes. Early in the year, Merrick had a string of sevenths, eighths and ninths. Then at the end of June, he had a 3rd place finish - but hadn't raced since then. Looks like that third place finish in June wasn't a fluke. Nice Job Merrick and Scott.

The Fletcher family had a good day sailing "Bananas" Sunday. Jim was skipper in the first two races and scored a forth and a fifth. In race three, Eddie took over driving duties and sailed the boat to a third place finish. Good Sailing Fletchers.

Lake Lansing Laser Champ Third in Nationals

John Val Tol, winner of the 2003 Lake Lansing Laser Regatta, finished third in last weekend's U.S. Singlehanded Sailing Championship. Andrew Campbell of San Diego captured US SAILING's George O'Day Trophy by winning the event and thus qualifies to race at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the Laser class. Anna Tunnicliffe (Norfolk, VA) finished ten points behind Campbell and eight points ahead of John Van Tol (Grosse Pointe Park, MI) who finished in third place. The Oklahoma City Boat Club in Oklahoma hosted the event, which was sailed in Lasers and sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A. and Vanguard Sailboats.
