Lasers and Sunfish Light Air Experts

The breeze threatened to die all evening, but kept on coming. Doug Carlson won two of the Laser races while Mike Moody won the other race. No fourth race was sailed by the 10 Lasers. Eight of the laser racers finished in the top five at some point during the evening, continuing to attest to the competitiveness that exists in the fleet.

For the Sunfish Fleet Gil Chesbro had three first place finishes and Dave Vietti scored a first in the other race. Not to be outdone by the Laser sailors in their abilities, at some time during the evening each of the seven Sunfish sailors finished in the top three.

Results and standings are available from the Race Results page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

Moody's Booty Rises to the Occasion

There was virtually no wind at all Thursday during the day - but just as the Lightning sailors began to gather, the wind began to come in. The last race was sailed in a dying breeze - but all three races were sailed. "Wind Dancer", sailed by Pat Dolan, Gary Marx and Gil Chesbro finished first in race one then had two third place finishes. Mike Moody, Erin Knight and Pete Kuhn sailed "Moody's Booty" to first place finishes in races two and three to go with a third in the first race. "Flying Pigs" lived up to its name with three second place finishes as Blaine Severin and Scott Watkins had her moving well. In all, ten Lightnings made the scene.

Results and standings are available from the Race Results page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

Laura Harvey on the Mend

Editor's Note: Laura Harvey is unexpectedly back in town. She sends us this report.
Last Sunday I was not feeling well. I just figured I was coming down with a cold or something and ignored it. On Monday I began to have right lower abdomen pain, that is when the camp nurse got concerned. She took me to the hospital that night to have me checked out. They ran many test but couldn't find anything wrong with me. They released me at 4 am and said if I was not better in 12 hours to come back. I was back in the hospital within 9 hours with severe pain. The doctors then determined it was my appendix. Although the tests did not show I had appendicitis, they also didn't show I didn't have appendicitis. I had my appendix removed Monday night at 6 PM. They sent me home Wednesday at 6 PM. I am now home in bed. Although I don't want visitors just yet, feel free to give me a call. It is quite boring lying in bed all day.

Ken Swetka at Radial Worlds in Italy

Editor's Note: Ken Swetka, of Crescent Yacht Club and one of the top finishers at LSC's recent Laser Regatta, is at the Radial Worlds in Italy. He sends this report.
We have made our way through northern Italy and ended up at Lake Garda. Two nights in Milan, one in Nice (France), one in Pisa, two in Firenza (Florence), and two in Venezia (Venice). We only had reservations in Milan and Venice...every where else we just looked around and found accomodations that were cheaper than what was listed on the internet. There have been many interesting sights to see, lots of churches and palaces. It is really amazing how prosperous these empires were and how long ago it all occurred.

Garda Sailing report - The wind here is strong but only near the shore on the west side (so far). The race course puts us in the Windward leeward loop in the windy side (18-20kts) and the reach, downwind, reach, are fairly light (10 kts). Even in the windy area the wind is very turbulent...much like sailing at CSYC when the wind is from the west in the fall but not quite so shifty.

My finishes in the first day were 36 and 17 out of 84 boats...not quite gold but I work on it...

Waterspout Wins Race to Windward Mark

A huge waterspout nearly hit the fleet during the Splash World Championships at Stavoren in the Netherlands. Take a look at the amazing photo of this from Keith Binns at http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/default2.asp?section=64&PID=1661.
