Laser Regatta Huge Success |
Saturday's Lake Lansing Laser Regatta was a huge success. Twenty sailors participated - more than in any recent year - as we crowned a new Michigan District champion. Although out-of-towners claimed all the top places, six of our LSC sailors were among the group and acquitted themselves well. Doug Carlson just missed winning race three. Pat Dolan led race two for several legs, and scored a fourth that race. Dave MacKenzie came away with the "Highest Finishing Novice" award. Other LSC sailors were John Fishbeck, Bob Miller, Mike Moody, and Chris Strugar-Fritsch. Our hats are off to John for leaving his Sunfish behind for a day to get back into a Laser. John Van Tol of Grosse Point Park won the event with 8 points (lowest score wins). He had three first place finishes to go with a second and a third. Tom LaBelle of Rochester Hills came in second. This regatta was also the O'Day National Single-Handed Championship qualifier and a bonus for John of winning is participation in the National Championship in August. |

Moody Rolls - Koster Reunites Masters Crew |
Mike Moody, sailing with newcomer Peter Kuhn and Doug Carlson, posted a second and two first place finishes in Lightning racing yesterday. Pat Dolan, Bob Miller and Gil Chesbro on "Wind Dancer" took the other first and had two seconds to complete their day. George Siegle, with Ann Siegle and Sheila Troxel on board, scored threes across the board. Competition was very keen with many of the nine participating crews taking the lead at various times. The wind was great, and it was a beautiful day on the water. FUBAR’s 1998 North American Master’s crew had a reunion of sorts today at LSC’s Sunday Lightning races. That year the North American Championships were sailed out of the North Cape Yacht Club at Lake Eire, 9 miles north of Toledo, Ohio. To sail in the Master’s Championships, the skipper must be 55 and the combined crew age must be at least 130 years. Larry Koster, Walter DeGruyter and Tom Rasmussen today sailed Bill Davidson’s Shibumi, our first time together in several years. The combined age for the three sailors is now 216 years. Said Larry Koster "We do not know how we placed for the races we sailed...but we gave the other younger crews something to think about! It was a great day to be sailing" Complete results and standings available soon through the Race Results page of the Club web site at www.lansingsailing.org. |

Practice Night a Winner |
| There has been very good participation in our newly instituted Tuesday practice night. This is an opportunity for sailors to come to the club and get in some practice time. Come out to the club and join in. This activity is for both skippers and crew - Lightnings and single-handers. There are structured activities for those that want to focus on specific skills - and help is available from some of our top local sailors. We encourage anyone participating on Lightnings to let our crew coordinator Pat Dolan know so that sufficient boats can be made available. |
