Wind Clears for Sunday Sailors

Rain in the morning and thunderstorms in the late afternoon served as bookends to a fabulous day of sailing Sunday. A special thanks to Paula White and Mary DuChene who did a great job on race committee - and it was their first time doing that duty.

The Committee had set a perfect course for race one. Then, a ninety degree wind shift thirty seconds into the five minute countdown made the race into four reaching legs. Blaine Severin, with Tom Deits in the middle and Julie Pierce up front urging their boat on, came from back in the pack on the last leg to win by several seconds over the "Wind Dancer" team. Mike Moody, sailing with Ken and Erin Knight, came from behind to place third. Terry Kleiman set the pace for three and two thirds legs - but fell victim to the wind gods who left them with nothing while giving boats around them their own private gusts. Lisa Winters and Doug Carlson sailed with Terry.

Pat Dolan, Stacy Kotecki and Gil Chesbro got "Wind Dancer" off to a great start in race two and held first place for the entire race. In the third race, "Moody's Booty" sailed a race that looked like an instant replay of the race two winners - but obviously with a different cast of characters.

Results and standings will be posted soon. From the LSC web site. Click "Race Results" then "Lightning Fleet Racing". You can also go directly to the results at www.msu.edu/~fishbeck/lsc/lightning/2003/LtngResults.htm. Put it in your "Favorites" list.

Moonlight Sail this Friday

The first Moonlight Sail of the season will be this coming Friday, June 13th. Bring a dessert to share at 8:00. Soft drinks will be provided. This event is one day away from the full moon and moonrise is about the time we begin - so sailing after dessert should be very nice. Don't worry if you don't have a boat that lends itself to a relaxing time on the water - there are usually enough spots on other boats and someone often brings a pontoon boat too.

Laser Regatta Saturday

This Saturday is the annual Lake Lansing Laser Regatta.Sailing - and it should be a big event because it is also the Laser District 19 (Michigan) Championship and the O'Day Single Handed Qualifier. The winner of the O'Day Qualifier goes to the national single handed championship later this sumjmer.Details, including sign-up information, are available on the Club web site at www.lansingsailing.org. Click on "Calendar", then on "Laser Regatta Info".

Volunteers Needed to Help with Merit Badge

On June 28th, a group of Cadette Girl Scouts will be at the Club working on their Smooth Sailing Badge. There will be shore school activities in the morning and sailing in the afternoon. Volunteers are needed to take the girls sailing (several to a boat) and help them develop the skills necessary to earn the badge. Alanna Harvey is coordinating the event - so please respond to her if you would like to help out.

Sign Up for Race Committee Duty

There are still a number of Lansing Sailing Club members who have not yet signed up for Race Committee Duty. Spots need filling in June, July and August. Sign up at the club, in the "Members Only" section of the web site or by calling Vice Commodore Mike Moody. Members who have forgotten their signon and password should send an email to Pat Dolan.

Club Now Has Weather Radio - Cameras Available

Commodore Ann Siegle announces that there is now a NOAA weather radio at the Lansing Sailing Club. It is located next to the computer in the men's changing room and has both a severe weather alarm and the forecast whenever you turn it on.

In addition, Ann notes that she has a VCR/camera for use in classes, at social and other Club events. Get in touch with her if you have an event you want to record and she will make the equipment available. Note: send some of the pictures to us so we can put them on the web site.

Dahlines Donate Fax Machine

Matt and Andrea Dahline, former members of the Lansing Sailing Club, still follow our activities through e-Sheet. When we put out a call for an experienced fax machine, they responded. Now the Club has the ability to fax racing results to the local media right after racing. Thanks Dahlines.
