May 21 Meeting to Discuss Investing in Possible LSC Property Acquisition |
| LSC members and others may have an opportunity to make an investment in the Club - at a favorable rate of return. The Lansing Sailing Club is considering expansion and improvement of the Club - including the possible purchase of additional property. To do this, the Club will need to raise money - probably by selling "bonds" or creating an investment partnership. Any member interested in knowing more about making an investment is invited to attend a May 21 meeting from 6:30 to 8:00. The location will be announced soon - meanwhile put the time and date on your calendar. |

Siegle Wins Two |
George Siegle, sailing with Ann Siegle in the front of the boat and Laura Harvey in the middle, took two first place finishes in Lightning racing last evening (Thursday, May 8). "Moody's Booty", skippered by Mike Moody with Ken Knight and Anna Hamilton took a second and a third. The "Wind Dancer" team of Pat Dolan, Gil Chesbro and Stacey Kotecki had a third and a second. Winds were very light and very shifty for the seven boats that raced. The race committee of Doug Carlson, Wayne Loescher and Larry Koster did very well to get two races in. Adult Discover Sailing Class Off to Great Start |
Threatening weather and early rain showers didn't deter the first "Discover Sailing for Adults" class last Monday. A weather system with high winds and rain went through just as the class started at 6 pm, but lasted only a few minutes. Jim Newtown, LSC volunteer administering the education programs, had arranged a classroom - just in case. But it turned out not to be necessary. LSC's Education Director, Terry Kleiman got things started with an explanation of sailing terminology and discussion of some safety issues. Then the class went out on the dock with for a discussion on "Points of Sail". Using paper napkins, participants created flags to check wind direction - then sails to catch the wind from various angles, as they learned about the no-go zone, sailing close hauled, reaching and running, tacking and gybing. The weather is still a little testy as the group headed back to shore for a demonstration of how to raise and trim sails. The wind cooperated by doing a 180 degree shift so participants could get a good idea of how the wind changes direction. With the wind direction change came a brief shower - so it was back to the clubhouse for a short chalk talk by Ann Siegle to review points of sail. Now it is 7 pm, the sky is clearing, and we head to the boats. The wind cooperated again by dying so participants would understand how quickly it can change velocity. This proved a perfect time to get out he paddles and give participants their first opportunity to steer the boats. At 7:15, the wind comes back again - a beautiful 6 mph. Just right for members of the class to be entirely comfortable trimming sails, tacking, and steering the boat from one point of sail to another. All the first day's objectives were met. A bonus was the beautiful sunset as the class brought boats back to the dock and put them away. Special thanks to Doug Carlson who volunteered his time to help keep things organized. Also to Ann Siegle, Mike Moody, and Pat Dolan for making their boats available for students to use - and for providing on-the-water instruction. The organizational skills of Jim Newtown and Terry Kleiman were fully in evidence as the class went very smoothly. The group will be back next Monday for session two of the class. |
