Wednesday Race Committee Job Available

Here is a great job opportunity for a couple of High School or College Students. The Lansing Sailing Club is looking for two people to run our Wednesday evening races during the summer. Pay is $10 per hour. The job includes setting marks on the race course, running the starting sequence, recording the results and picking up the marks after racing. No prior experience is necessary - training is provided. Anyone interested should email the Vice Commodore right away.

Pontiac's Tom Klaban Wins Lightning Regatta

Tom Klaban, with sons Eric and Brian crewing, won last Saturday's Lightning Regatta on Lake Lansing. Twelve boats took part in very competitive racing. Four different boats took first place finishes, including LSC's George Siegle - and four different boats took second place finishes, including LSC's Pat Dolan and George Siegle.

George Siegle was the highest placing Lansing Boat, coming in fourth. George also walked away with the Spartan Alumni award for being the highest finishing former MSU grad. George attribued his success to crew Ann Siegle and Sheila Troxel.

Wind Dancer Takes Two Firsts

The Wind Dancer team of Skipper Pat Dolan, middle crew Gil Chesbro and front crew Bob Miller took first place finishes in two of the three Lightning fleet races yesterday. Mike Moody was first in the remaining race with Lori Katz and Ken Knight aboard. Seven boats participated.

There were some good stories from Sunday's racing. Mike Moody came from last place in race three to finish second. George Siegle came from behind in race two to finish second. Neil Harrison was sailing very well and involved in at least one exciting four boat mark rounding in 15 mph winds. Ron Marshall, even without a spinnaker, was in practically a photo finish for second place with two other boats and kept improving as the day went on with finishes of 6th, 5th and 4th. John LeFevre was working with an entirely new crew: Stacey Kotecki and Julie Pierce. Don Baron got his mast upand picked up a third crew member just in time to race. Blaine Severin came at the last minute and found a ride for two races - then got his own boat going to sail the third race with John LeFevre's crew after John had to leave.

Thanks to Larry Koster, Tom Rasmussen and Doug Carlson for an excellent course, successful intervention with the wind and weather gods, and well run races.

Results and standings soon at www.lansingsailing.org.

Race Committee Orientation Wednesday May 14

Race Committee Orientation has been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 14th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. There will be an explanation of how to run the starting sequence using the new automated equipment and a review of how to use the Safety Boat and communication devices to expedite course set-up and perform other Race Committee duties. This will be followed by an on-water session on how to set up a race course.

Safety Boat Security

A reminder to members who use the Safety Boat:

  • Take the key off the boat and lock it in the shed.
  • Use the padlock and chain to lock the wheel on the lift.
  • Be sure to get the boat high enough on the lift that a rising lake level and high wave conditions won't be a problem.

Waiting List for Adult Discover Sailing Class

The Lansing Sailing Club's "Discover Sailing for Adults" is a sell out - with a waiting list. The first class starts tonight under the able direction of LSC's Education Director, Terry Kleiman. Members volunteer to teach and to use their boats for students to use during the class.

Members Need to Sign Up for Race Committee

About half of the membership still needs to sign up for Race Committee Duty. Remember, each member needs to serve on one Race Committee during the season to fulfill one of their duty obligations. Members can sign up for more than on Race Committee. A list of Race Committee assignments and vacancies can be found in the "Members Only" section of the web site at www.lansingsailing.org/. Instructions for how to sign up are at the top of the Race Committee web page. Anyone having problems signing up should send an email to the Vice-Commodore - and include the date you want to sign up for.
