Koster and Siegle Lead Lightning Sailors in Sunday Racing |
Larry Koster, that wily guy whose name is on LSC Lightning tropies numerous times, got the 2003 racing season off to a good start with a big win. Supported by crew Tom Rasmussen and Paul Caterino, Larry split with the leaders on the second windward leg and found the wind he needed to jump into a commanding lead he never relinquished. George Siegle took charge of the next two races, picking up where he left off in 2002. With Ann Siegle on the front position and Laura Harvey in the middle, they sailed almost perfectly. New member Merrick Hurlbutt and spouse Kathy did their first racing at LSC. Lisa Winters, who attended the Crewing Seminar and is doing her first sailing, was the third member of the crew. Welcome. Blaine Severin, with stalwart front crew Julie Pierce and new to crewing Lori Katz had a 4th, 2nd and 5th for the day. Terry Kleiman had two third place finishes during the day, with Stacey Kotecki and Scott Watkins aboard. Bob Hill and Leif Alton were aboard with John LeFevre to sail the green boat well. Neil Harrison kept improving during the day with an 8th, a 7th and a 4th. Mike Moody's plane wasn't able to get him here in time to sail - but his boat was on the starting line anyway. Mike let three members of the MSU Sailing Club join the racing in his stead. Thanks to Corey Schoenherr, Matt Palmer and Rebecca Wilson for racing with us. Next up is the Lake Lansing Lightning Regatta - next Saturday, May 3. |

Saturday Crewing Seminar a Big Success |
| A great group came to participate in the Crewing Seminar held last Saturday afternoon. A special thanks to George Siegle, Terry Kleiman, Neil Harrison, Doug Carlson and Blaine Severin who treated participants to on-the-water instruction in Lightnings. The sun was shining and the wind held throughout the day. A presentation on "Strategy" and the "Basics of Spinnaker Work" filled out the day. Before the day was over, several of the participants were recruited to crew during Lightning racing the next day. |

Gary Jobson Receiving Treatment for Lymphoma |
| Gary
Jobson, the face and voice of sailing for North America and much of the
world, has cancelled his schedule of lectures and TV work for the next two
months while he will be treated for lymphoma. After recent examinations
for fatigue and shortness of breath, Jobson, 52, received the final diagnosis
last Tuesday. Jobson is scheduled to receive the first of six to eight monthly
chemotherapy treatments Friday.
"For the first time in my 30-year speaking career I have been forced to cancel presentations", said Jobson Thursday. "Yesterday I was diagnosed with lymphoma," he continued, "which is ironic since I have been chairman of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's regatta series for the past 11 years. I have been advised not to schedule any activities for the next two months. I will be receiving chemotherapy for the next six to eight months to battle back from this disease. I am going to be in a quiet period now for the next 10 days. Apparently, the treatments are hard. Sorry to give you this report. My spirits are good. I hope to be around the waterfront later this summer." |
