Strictly Sail a Hit
Several Lansing sailors made their way to Strictly Sail in Chicago this last weekend. Everyone seemed to have a good time checking out the cruisers and racing machines on display as well as the many exhibits and seminars. Your editor ran into several MSU Sailing Team members. Mike Moody and Ken Knight spent time looking at land sailors in addition to the sailboats. We also ran into former LSC member Bill Strzelewicz who now works for Larsen in Chicago. Bill looks great, is doing a lot of sailing in the Chicago area, and continues his subscription to e-Sheet so he can follow Lansing area sailing. In one seminar, Gary Jobson did his usual great job of discussing current issues - including the America's Cup. Gary looks for Alingi to win this one - but the New Zealand "Hula" is an "X" factor and just might provide the additional boat speed necessary for the defender to retain the cup. There were a number of other excellent seminars too. Pat Dolan attended Tami Oldham Ashcraft's presentation re-capping her gripping story of being capsized in a hurricane and losing her partner overboard. She survived 41 days and sailed herself under jury rig - 1500 miles to Hawaii. She provided excellent information on safety equipment. Pat came away with an autographed copy of her book. Lou Carretero, of Colgate's Offshore Sailing School, gave excellent and humorous presentations on several topics. In his "Docking and Anchoring" seminar, he teaches by telling the story of trying to dock a boat with the wind coming at right angles to the pier. His plan was to come downwind straight at the dock, do a quick turn onto a reach and let the sails luff until the boat came to a stop. He neglected to appreciate the impact pilings on the edge of the dock would have as the boom came in contact with them. The pilings kept the boom from going all the way out and the sail therefore continued to be full of wind - pushing the boat rapidly along the dock toward another boat tied there. Fortunately, the mainsheet caught on a cleat and brought Lou's boat to an instant stop. Unfortunately, his sailing partner who was standing on the bow holding a mooring line didn't stop. He kept going - right into the water. Lou's humorous story didn't end here. He and his sailing partner carefully tied the boat to the pier - putting bumpers between the boat and dock. A bow line, stern line and spring lines were tightly secured - and off to dinner they went. Upon returning, quite a crowd had gathered. What could they be looking at? Well, in tying off the boat Lou had neglected to factor in the tide - which was now at it's low point. The boat was still tightly secured to the dock, but now it was a few feet off the water. Those of you who know Lou can probably anticipate that he would join the onlookers and ask "what dummy tied that boat up?" |

America's Cup Starts Friday Feb 14
It is almost here. A week from this Friday, on February 14th, ESPN2 will begin live coverage at 7 PM of the America's Cup. Will New Zealand, with its mysterious "Hula" have more speed and prevail in their role as defender? Or, will Alingi, with the core of the last New Zealand team now sailing aboard, win the cup for Switzerland. Tune in. This is a best of nine match racing series. ESPN2 coverage info is in the "Sailing on TV" section of this e-Sheet as well as the LSC web site. For more info on the America's cup, check out the official web site. There is also extensive local New Zealand coverage at the New Zealand Herald web site. |
