Sailors to Meet Wednesday Jan 15
Lansing sailors will be gathering Wednesday evening, January 15, for their January informal get-together. This is a slight change from the usual second Wednesday date to take advantage of the opportunity to watch sailing on TV. From 7-9 PM the group will be at Spagnoula's taking advantage of the pasta special. From 9-11 PM everyone is invited to Pat Dolan's to watch the Louis Vuitton Challenger finals on OLN. If you can't make it to Spag's, you are still welcome to join the group at Dolan's. Pat's place is at 1340 Hickory Island Drive on Lake Lansing. Take Haslett Road to Marsh Road. Turn north on Marsh and go one block to Lake Drive. Turn right (east) on Lake Drive. Hickory Island Drive is the fifth left. |

LSC Winter Social Friday Feb 7
A social event has been scheduled for Friday, February 7th, beginning at 6pm at Coral Gables. Please come, have a drink or dinner and socialize with other LSC members. At 7pm, the Sunfish fleet will present annual awards, and at 8pm the Lightning fleet will have their annual fleet meeting. Treasurer Bob Miller will be on hand if you want to pay your 2003 dues (they are due February 10th) and avoid the cost of an envelope and stamp. You can also sign up for your Race Committee duty (the good dates are usually taken the first night). |

40th Year for LSC
Larry Koster recently reminded us that 2003 is the 40th anniversary of the Lansing Sailing Club. The Club has certainly seen changes over that period. In 2003, under the leadership of Commodore Ann Siegle, plans for more improvements are underway. This is promising to be another terrific year of sailing at LSC. |

Alingi Leads in LVC Challenger Finals
Alingi has jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Oracle BMW in their best of nine match race series for the right to face New Zealand in the America's Cup. Alingi seems to have a slight speed edge upwind, the ability to point slightly higher than Oracle and seems slightly faster tacking and getting back up to speed. Oracle appears to have the edge in downwind speed. The net result of these differences in the boats so far has been that Alingi has been able to slowly work its way out in front midway through the first leg and then protect that lead. Oracle has also suffered from some boat handling problems and tactical errors. In race two for example, they lost their spinnaker under the boat during a takedown, broke the pole and went from two lengths behind to twelve lengths behind within a very short time. On the tactical side, Oracle's afterguard has misjudged a number of laylines with the result that they have sailed unnecessary extra distance. Race 3 is scheduled for tonight (Tuesday, January 14) at 9 PM on the Outdoor Life Network. Race 4 coverage will be Wednesday evening and Race 5 coverage Thursday evening. Let's see if the Oracle crew can turn things around. Lansing area sailors are invited to watch the Wednesday evening, January 15th race at Pat Dolan's home from 9 PM to 11 PM. Pat lives at 1340 Hickory Island Drive in Haslett. |

Look for Annual Dues Statement in Mail
LSC members should soon be receiving their annual dues statement in the mail. The deadline for paying dues is February 10th (with some special provisions for Regular Members to spreads the payment out over several months if they wish to do this and pay a carrying charge). As usual, with the statement members will receive a copy of their individual profile. Members are asked to review the profile and to note any corrections necessary - then return it with their dues payment. |
