Dolan Takes Two, Weather God One
Pat Dolan, sailing with Stacey Kotecki and John LeFevre, took two first place finishes in Lightning Racing Sunday, September 22nd. The first race saw Dolan's "Wind Dancer" pull away to lead at the windward mark. Then, on the first downwind leg, Mike Moody gybed and stayed with a gust of wind that Dolan didn't get to. The result was that "Moody's Booty" led by two boatlengths at the end of the first leeward leg. Dolan took advantage of a wind shift to get "Wind Dancer" back into first place half way up the second windward leg - and held the lead to finish first. "Moody's Booty", with Ken Knight and Kim Knight crewing for Mike was second. Terry Kleiman, sailing with Scott Watkins and Tom Rasmussen was third. "Fubar", sailed by Neil Harrison with Alanna Harvey and Jim Newtown crewing, was fourth.

Race two was marked by a forty degree left shift just seconds before the start. Dolan was at the pin end to take advantage. However, part way up the leg, the wind began to die. Scott Watkins, now driving the Kleiman boat, found wind and got to the windward mark first. In a dying breeze that continued to shift left, Watkins tried to make the spinnaker work, without success. Seeing this as he was coming to the windward mark, Dolan played the next leg as a beat to windward - catching up with Watkins. With the wind moving left again to complete a 180 degree shift, the two boats were nip and tuck as they came to the finish of a shortened course. Dolan was able to come out the winner again, just beating Watkins to the finish line. Moody and Harrison fought it out for third. At the end, Harrison was on Starboard while Moody was on port. Moody executed a perfect duck and had enough speed to beat the "Fubar" crew by inches.

By now the wind had almost completely died and the sailors gave up for the day.
