Light Air Cancels Sunday Racing
There was very little wind anywhere on Sunday (September 8). As a result, Lightning racing was cancelled by mutual agreement of the skippers and race committee. This was one of the few times the Lightnings haven't raced in the last several years. Hopefully next Sunday will bring better conditions. You can get season standings directly from the Scoring Guy or by following links after clicking "Race Results" on the LSC Web Site.

Messerschmidt and Moody Have Fenton Success
By Olav Messerschmidt Mike Moody and Olav Messerschmidt sailed in the Lake Fenton Laser Regatta last Saturday. Winds went from moderate to very light and shifty. By early afternoon the light air was joined by lots of powerboat wakes. One time, a large powerboat started up near Mike and filled his cockpit half full of water. Seventeen Lasers participated, but from our perspectives the most interesting racing included Bill Coberly, Mike and Olav who continually traded finish positions 2, 3 and 4. In one race, after a long Olympic course, all three boats had a photo finish on starboard tack at the pin end. In the end, Coberly got second, Olav third and Mike fourth (the 3 places were separated by only 3 points). Bill’s son, Chad outclassed the rest of the fleet with 5 bullets. The Lake Fenton club has a wonderful facility and the members were excellent hosts. They served a nice lunch and after the racing it was ice cold beer and even clean towels for those that wanted to shower. After sailing in light, shifty air with temperatures over 90 degrees, a cold beer certainly hit the spot. |

Dolan and Severin at Whitecap
It was a weekend of light (or no) breeze at Cass Lake for the Whitecap Regatta sponsored by the Pontiac Yacht Club. Representing the Lansing Sailing club, Pat Dolan, Terry Kleiman and Stacey Kotecki took "Wind Dancer" while Blaine Severin, Julie Pierce and John LeFevre took "Unidentified Flying Pigs". After two postponements, racing got underway on Saturday in mid-afternoon. The Lansing folks acquitted themselves well on the first leg, rounding the weather mark 2nd and 4th. "Wind Dancer" held its second place position for the downwind - and were still in good position at the second windward mark. Then the wind died. Eventually there were some modest puffs - on the other side of the course from the Lansing contingent. You can guess the result. The second race was more of the same. A very good windward leg for the Lansingites, followed by wind in all the wrong spots during the downwind leg. The course was shortened before there was any opportunity to recover. There was no racing on Sunday for lack of wind. So, a 22nd place finish for "Wind Dancer" and a 26th for "Flying Pigs" out of 33 boats. Despite the lack of wind, Pontiac again put on a very good regatta. It is always a pleasure to be there and take advantage of such a great facility. Maybe some day we'll find a way to have something comparable at Lake Lansing. |

Entrance Looks Great
The new gate is now installed at the Lansing Sailing Club, thanks to the leadership of Rear Commodore Chris Strugar-Fritsch. With the new plantings, just put in under the leadership of Joanne Princinsky last week, the Club entrance looks great. Be sure to pass on thanks to Chris, Joanne and the members that helps them. |
