Siegle Wins Three Sunday
By Larry Koster
It was a threatening sky for LSC’s Lightning fleet on Sunday, July 28th. The Race Committee and the 7 skippers decided to sail 3 races back-to-back. Joel Shapiro and Olav Messerschmidt set up a nice windward-leeward course for the 7 boats and crews. The first two races were 4 legs with a down wind finish, giving the spectators at the North County Park a good view of the colorful spinnakers coming at them. The 3rd race was 5 legs with the finish at the weather mark, some 300 yards from shore, slightly right (north) of the South County Park.

George and Ann Siegle, aboard their FINS, claimed 1st place finishes in each of the three races. Having qualified at the Tawas Bay Michigan District Championships, they will represent LSC at the 2002 Lightning North American Championships August 10-16 at the North Cape Yacht Club on Lake Erie at LaSalle, MI, 9 miles north of Toledo, Ohio. They may be the first LSC boat ever in this event as historical information is incomplete.

The "Wind Dancer" crew, skipper Pat Dolan, Gary Marks and Bob Miller, finished as follows: 3rd, 2nd & 3rd. The "UFP" crew of skipper Blaine Severin, Dennis Dudley and Julie Pierce placed: 2nd, 5th & 2nd.

Terry Kleiman and Scott Watkins, sailing their first time this year, placed 4th in each of the 3 races. FUBAR’s skipper Neil Harrison, with the ‘Masters’ crew of Tom Rasmussen and Larry Koster, took a 3rd in the second race and 5th place finishes in the first and third races.

Lightning North American Championships Coming
Would you like to be a spectator at the Lightning North American Championships on Lake Erie? Preliminary Races are Sunday and Monday, August 11-12. Races 1 & 2 are scheduled for Tuesday, August 13th. Races 3 & 4 for Wednesday, August 14th and weather permitting, Races 5 & 6 for Thursday, August 15th. Most likely there will be over 100 Lightnings, divided into 3 fleets. Spectator boats will be available. It is quite a sight to see over 100 colorful spinnakers flying. It is roughly 120 miles to the North Cape YC...down I-96 to I-275 to I-75, getting off at Exit 9 on I-75. Any questions, contact Larry Koster.

Excitement Ends Day of Sunday Sailing
By Larry Koster
While heading back to the main dock, there were a couple exciting moments following the last race on Sunday, July 28th. It seems that Dennis was at the helm of Blaine’s "UFP" when they capsized some 150 yards from the main dock. They are standing in 3 feet of water with Julie high and dry! Wonder what those two guys will do next weekend at Higgins Lake where the depth sometimes exceeds 90 feet?

Then there was the dark blue Lightning that almost came ashore between the main and north docks. The writer was anticipating the sound of crunching fiberglass against the jagged concrete seawall. Wow! Several running LSC members prevented the boat from ramming the north dock near the shoreline. The skipper is nominated for the 2002 Jon C. Stoval Perpetual Peculiar Award.
