Siegle and Marshall Share Firsts
Sunday 6/2/02
Winds, NNW, 5-10mph

Five boats sailed the first race on Sunday in light and shifty conditions. George Siegle and the FINS crew led the first race 'drag race' reach until the second upwind leg, when shifts of 180 degrees at the weather mark nestled in the 'Condo Cove' at the north end let Ron Marshall sneak in around the mark with his own private wind. Marshall's crew went on to a first place finish in race 1.

Second race, the RC moved the course down the lake (same weather mark position). At the first weather mark, a powerboater circled our BEMA inflatable mark several times and then tried to steal it. He got it up out of the water on his third pass 'round it. The FINS crew was up on their bow yelling at the offending powerboater, who did move the weather mark about five feet from it's original location (but before any boats had rounded). We're not sure what the guy was thinking, perhaps a bait bucket or a case of beer was attached to that mark. The sheriff's police boat was out nabbing drinking boaters and not surprisingly, the lake was almost cleared of powerboats by the time we got off the water!

Matt Dahline, in the club's safety boat, guarded the mark for the next upwind leg, and took it in to replace it with our less-attractive-to-powerboaters large mark at the lunch break. George Siegle and the FINS crew took a first place in the second race, with 6 boats racing.

In the third race, after lunch, the course in about the same spot, the FINS crew started to cover Blaine's crew on UFP, on the left side of the course on the final fifth leg, but looked right to see Ron Marshall and the crew of Ohm, in a fresh breeze, sailing up the right side. So they quickly flipped over to cover the Marshalls and went on to a first place finish with four boats after the fifth leg.

NOODer's Return From Successful Venture
The participation of Lansing sailors in the Detroit 2002 National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta was very successful. In a fleet of 24 Tartan Tens, including all but a few of the top T-Ten boats across the country, our Lansing crew finished 8th overall. On a race by race basis, the finishes were 9, 4, 2, 17, 1, 7 and 18. The first place finish was certainly the highlight of the week - holding off the second place boat in a dramatic gybing duel to the finish where one small mistake could easily have enabled the other boat to go by.
