Special NOOD Report
We had three races today. Improving each time, we scored an 8th, a 4th and a 2nd (with 24 boats in our class). There were about 6 classes of boats racing in "Area A". The Tartan Tens were the third class to start. The Race Committee was very prompt and the warning flag went up exactly at 10:25. The first class went at 10:30, the second at 10:35 and then the Tartan Tens at 10:40. The day was full of excitement. With more than 215 boats participating on three race courses, there were sails everywhere and you had to pay attention constantly to possible collisions. On top of this, the wend blew in the upper teens with gusts in the low 20s. We had a spinnaker halyard come undone after a hoist and had to grab the sail out of the water, hook up an extra halyard and get it up again. During a gybe-douse, bringing the spinnaker down into the foreward hatch, it took jib sheets with it - and that took time to sort out. All in all however, we are sailing fast and our crew work is coming together. We're not yet at the level of Tartan Ten crews that sail at the top of the fleet - but if we can keep improving, we will end the regatta with a very good result. Our current position in the regatta is third - just two points in front of the next boat. Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit is hosting the 2002 NOOD and advertises that daily results will be posted at www.byc.com/bychost/noodresults.htm. Look for another report after Saturday's racing. That's it for now from the NOOD Team: Doug Carlson, Pat Dolan, John Fishbeck, Terry Kleiman, Vladimer "Kuli" Kulinichenko, Mike Moody, Neil Harrison and Sheila Troxel. |
