NOOD Practice Opportunity
There are several spots available for practice sessions with the Lansing NOOD Warriors for Tuesday, May 28 (1 PM to 6 PM) and Wednesday, May 29 (10:30 AM to 3:30 PM) (see article at end of this newsletter). These practices will be held on Lake St. Clair, leaving from one of the Grosse Pointe area marinas. Coach "Kuli" will be on board to help us learn more about trimming the sails, spinnaker sets-gybes-douses, and other boat handling. This is a great opportunity to learn more about sailboat racing and about big boat racing. If you have an interest in participating please contact Pat Dolan as soon as possible. |

Sailing Gear to Keep You Warm (or Cool)
Some of you have asked for help in selecting sailing gear to keep you warm on these cold spring days - and warm when summer finally arrives. Doug Carlson comes to the rescue, pointing out that the "Yachtsman", a Birmingham outdoor apparel store has a checklist with alternatives for some of the expensive stuff. Click here to access their web site. |

Lansing NOOD Warriors Have Big Success
NOTE: Seven Lansing area sailors have borrowed a Tartan Ten to sail in the Detroit National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta the first weekend in June. They warmed up for this event by sailing in the Detroit Volvo Leukemia Regatta Saturday. Here is a report from Pat Dolan. Arriving at the starting area, we found only one other T-Ten. At our start, we were toward the pin end and to leeward of our T-Ten opponent. We gassed them off - and kept on sailing faster then they did. After a couple of tacks, we developed a routine that seemed efficient. The jib came in nicely with Neil Harrison and Gil Chesbro (subbing for Terry Kleiman) working out a good routine for trimming. Everyone seemed to find a lane to cross the boat. Mike Moody, at the helm, kept the boat moving fast and pointing high. We were tacking through about 70 degrees in 15-18 winds. John Fishbeck was the master navagator. Getting us to the start, solving the flag system used by the RC, finding marks, and layline calls were up to his usual high standards. We are first to the weather mark in a four leg windward-leeward race. The spinnaker comes up smoothly, a gybe, a douse, a good tactical rounding and we have extended our lead over the other T-Ten. Now the challenge is to hold off the rest of the fleet. Thanks to Jim Newtown's packing job, the spinnaker was perfect coming out of the bag every time. Doug Carlson was masterful on the foredeck and providing the lead on tactics. Approaching the windward mark, a C&C35 is coming up on us very fast - but we gass him a little to hold him off. At the mark, we have a very good set, but the 35 has our wind and slides by to windward. However, going to leeward the 35 doesn't seem faster (like she was upwind) and we pin them out to the side of the course. They lose a little trying to gain separation so we are neck and neck coming to the finish. Much of the rest of the fleet has gone the other way on the downwind leg to the finish - and comes in on starboard. A J-105 crosses about 10 boat lengths ahead and does a nifty gybe in front of us to cover and finish first. We don't know if we finished second or third - it was too close to call between us and the 35. For race two, with excellent crew work, Mike has us right on the money at the start flag with a full head of steam. We are really moving now. As a storm goes through with lots of wind and rain, we extend and lead at the windward mark by about 500 yards. Then as we approach the downwind mark, the wind begins to die. The Race Committee decides that's enough for the day and sends everyone home. Naturally, the wind comes back up - but there is more rain, hail and the cold is beginning to get to some of us. After 7 hours on the water, I think everyone is glad racing is over for the day and we're headed back to the Marina. The consensus is that it was a very good day for the Lansing NOOD Warriors. Now there is a week off followed by several practices leading up to the NOOD Regatta. Thanks for all the support from all the Lansingites that have inquired and wished us well. Pat Dolan |
