Lightning Racing Again Sunday
Lightning racing picks up again this Sunday, May 19. After being "stormed out" last Thursday, and skipping Mother's Day, skippers and crew should be ready to go.

Lansing Sailors Prepare for NOOD Regatta
Seven Lansing area sailors have arranged to borrow a 34 foot Tartan Ten sailboat to sail in the Detriot National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta, May 31 thru June 2. They take to the water this Saturday in a practice regatta - the Detroit Volvo Leukemia Cup Regatta. This regatta is for a great cause. Anyone wishing to donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society should contact Pat Dolan. Sailing in this endeavor are Doug Carlson, Terry Kleiman, Mike Moody, Pat Dolan, Neil Harrison, John Fishbeck and Jim Newtown. There should be good stories to tell after this weekend.

"Break the Ice" a Huge Success
More than 30 found their way to a fun evening last Saturday at the LSC "Break the Ice" party. Thanks to Carol and George Zimmermann, who took leadership for organizing the event, it was a huge success. For those of you that missed out on the great food, lively activities, singing oldies and current pop - ask someone that was there about the toilet paper roll.

Koster Rescues Committee Boat
Larry Koster went to the Lansing Sailing Club last Saturday morning and found the Committee boat listing precariously to Starboard. Alas, the heavy wind and waves had caused a hole in the back of the starboard pontoon about 6" by 1". Larry quickly enlisted the aid of Pat Dolan and got the boat out of the water and the pontoon drained. The boat is now at the boat doctor getting a new rear end. It will be back in service before Sunday's racing.

Larry tells the following tale of a storm several years ago: "The 'Wind Gods' of 1990 determined that the Lightning regatta of June 2nd and June 3rd would be a one day event. Saturday's winds were gusting from 29 to 43 mph. Mark Spicknall won the one day event. Bob Mathers of Pontiac YC was second. Bill Celio was the Race Committee Chairman. The Lansing Airport reported that the Sunday winds were gusting to 60 mph..."

Larry continues: "On Monday, June 3, 1990, we learned that the main dock had broken away from its westerly tire anchors. The up and down movement of the docks causes the chains to wear and weaken. The main dock had swung over towards the north dock, after breaking the weakened anchor chains. The big 'lever' of the main dock dragged the 'closer to shore anchors' with it. Luckily, at that time we had 8-10 (or more) reserve tire anchors behind the shed. Via telephone tree we rounded up a work party to reposition the main dock. We bought two 5 gallon pails of a heavier chain to make the repairs..." Thanks Larry - for Saturday's rescue and for a little history.

Strugar-Fritsch Comes Up With Great Solution
Larry Koster sends us the following report on a great job done by our Rear Commodore, Chris Strugar-Fritsch: "Chris came up with one of the best LSC improvement ideas for the past 10 years. The newly implanted sea wall eye bolt anchors securely held the RC boat dock sections in place during yesterday's passing cold front. According to the Channel 6 noon time news on May 9th, winds were blowing in the 35 to 40 mph range - and the dock is still securely in place." A big thank you to Chris.
