Long Range Planning this Saturday
Commodore Ann Siegle is putting a lot of emphasis on Long Range Planning this year. George Siegle is heading up this effort and is hosting the first meeting this coming Saturday, February 23rd, from 10 AM to 4 PM. The meeting will be at George's office. Any member wishing to participate is invited to do so. Contact George Siegle to let him know you want to participate and he will send you directions to his office.

"Boat Smart" Course Begins Feb 28
A "Boat Smart" course, offered by the Lansing Power Squadron, begins Thursday, February 28th. This is a four week course for inland lake boaters covering boat handling, docking, boating safety and many other topics every boater ought to know. There is a course fee of $40.00 payable at registration. Call 517-339-2665 to register. The power squadron offers this course and another course for great lakes boaters several times each year. For more info, go to www.lansingsailing.org/page.cfm/52/. Dennis Dudley, LSC member and power squadron leader, is also willing to answer questions in the evening at 517-676-1557.

New Members at LSC
The Board of Directors of the Lansing Sailing Club has approved several applications for membership. Returning are Matt and Andrea Dahline. Business took them away from Lake Lansing for several years. But now they are back with their Lightning. Matt is several times the past champion of Lightning season racing on Lake Lansing with Andrea his able crew.

Also returning are Bob and Jane Chronister. After a year's furlough, Bob says he has crew for 2002 and is looking forward to getting out and racing his Lightning.

George Zimmerman is a new member who has moved to the Lansing area from Ohio where he sailed an Interlake and a Force 5. He will be getting a fleet boat and joining in the racing on Lake Lansing.

UK Sailmakers Race Quiz
UK Sailmakers has prepared an excellent series of race rule quizes. Sign on to their web site at www.uksailmakers.com and click on "Take Our Rules Quiz" under their "Learning Center" section. This series graphically shows many common racing situations and then provides detailed information on what the rules require.

It's Rio for Amer Too
(Editors Note: e-Sheet is following Amer Sports Too in the Volvo Ocean Race)
As we go to press, Lisa MacDonald and her Amer Too crew are sailing into Rio de Janiero to finish Leg 4 of the Volvo Ocean Race. Problems with their ballast system and early tactical decisions put them in an early hole on this 6700 mile plus leg.

Amer Too and the other boats have recently encountered problems sailors on Lake Lansing can identify with: weeds. On Sunday, Katie Pettibone from Amer Sports Too went swimming to release some ‘giant’ kelp from the keel after a couple of attempted back downs failed to offload the sticky weed.

“We have been running north as fast as we can to escape getting caught by this high pressure and a back down is the last thing we wanted to be doing today,” said skipper Lisa McDonald, “But as soon as you have weed stuck to the bottom of the boat it slows you down, incredibly.”
